In November's Aviation Safety, Tom Turner makes a couple of assertions that surprise me.
One has been talked about here before: That when in Class B airspace, you need to obtain a VFR clearance before canceling IFR. I believe the consensus was that this was perhaps technically true but not a real-world consideration.
The other is that violations (plural) have been issued by the FAA to pilots who have cancelled IFR while in Class D before being handed over to the tower. I can't see how this would've happened, unless perhaps it involved pilots inappropriately trying to game the system and aggravating the controller. Anyone know the stories of any of these violations?
