Screen resolution is one of the big price differentiators out there, which is why most consumer laptops have relatively low resolution.
Also, as you have noticed, the ability to watch wide-screen movies also has drive the shape of screens out there. The default screen resolution on a 15" MacBook Pro is 1400x900, for example, but you won't find one for $800.
I see on the Levovo web site you can configure a T520 with a 1600x900 (or even higher(!) resolutions screens, but the prices goes up accordingly.
