My very first airplane ride was a charter from Green Bay to Land O' Lakes on the Michigan/Wisconsin state line. I was a new TV reporter. The job that day was to interview astronaut James Lovell, who had just returned from space and was on vacation.

It was the summer of 1967. One year later I was in USAF undergraduate pilot training.
