Head'n to Hong Kong

Randy and Dux,

About 2.5 hours out of PHNL I start hearing "-- -.. -.--" and the ADF swings about 20 degrees to the NW. I start thinking about how many times Randy and Dux heard this on their many trips across the Pacific. As I pass PMDY (blue dot at 2:30) I'm only 2800 NM from another garden spot, Kadena (RODN) which I'll pass to the north. I've been there a couple of times and thought the best part of the trip was leaving. I bet Chris has some stories about that place and maybe Randy in his trusty KC-97. :-)) Destination is Kai Tak. The weather will be good as I pass north of one typhoon and south of the one that just hit China. I guess those big storms have a way of clearing things out for a while. Todays flight was flight planned at 10.00 hours and 195,000 lbs of fuel, release with 241,800. TOW of 737,000 and LDW 541,800 (B777F).

>>garden spot, Kadena ..... maybe Randy in his trusty KC-97<<

C-97s. But the most vivid recollection I have of it was at the end of about 26 hours of flying out of 28:30 (SAC VC-54, Hickam, Wake, Okinawa) on duty, two pilots, and having the sun hit me in the eyes on final. 1959.

Chris and I agree, Kadena's "O" Club always smelled like an oriental house of ill repute to me.

Anyhow, years later, IIRC we used Naha on the airline's 747s. Dux?

best, randy

That hurts just thinking about it. :-))

Lots of that in SE Asia. Or just as bad watching the sun come up through the windshield after flying two hours and realize it'll probably be another ten before it's over. :-))

Must be a military thing.

And ah . . . You ‘n Chris know this smell how? Must ‘a been that time y’all had to go and retrieve some wayward crewmen from one of those ah . . . “oriental houses of ill repute”. <Big grin>

Yup, I suspect so, Gordy Graham (when S.A.M. [Pentagon's fleet] ran out of airplanes they'd call us at Offutt for VIP transport] was in back and, approaching Wake Island (where we'd planned on refueling and RON'ng), they came up front and told us "the general's aide forgot the Int'nl Date Line, can you SAC weenies press on without crew rest?"

Well, first off, I just have NO idea about how Junior knows.

And, oddly enuf, I did have to go find and retrieve one of our navigators from some bar/place in San Francisco before we left on that first "grande tour of the Orient". We got a phone call where we were at that little bar across from the Mark Hopkins and he sez "come get me out'a here, I need help, this place has got peanut shells all over the floor and it smells to high heaven".

best, randy

Randy, When I was in Naha in the early 50's the "O" club official name was The Copacabana but the crew referred to it as the the cop-ya=banana-club" which referred to the unofficial happenings at the place. Gene
