Restart Procedure/Bonanza
      #356653 - 11/19/12 01:42 PM

Let's say you've got a Bonanza IO-520BB, that runs a tank dry in flight. For whatever reason, the pilot stops the prop (take this as a given, please). To restart, is the appropriate procedure to prime before turning the starter?

Yabbut if he has some decent airspeed and he bumps the starter, won't the prop then start windmilling? Then mags on and fuel on and away he goeth..

I would try it without turning on the boost pump, first. Fuel, air and spark and it should light off.

Let us assume this happens at about 1000' agl, so not enough altitude to try to get the prop spinning ( not sure what speed you'd need to get it going again). Gil, if the prop's stopped, no fuel for the start without the boost prime, right?

I would use boost pump, it would get fuel up the lines faster.

I would use the emergency landing checklist (find a good spot first!) and
forget about the engine.

I agree with Ray. That low, better to try and do a survivable landing than muck around with the engine, boost pump and so forth.

But if you've got two pilots, then the guy in the right seat can try to get the engine going.

Dunno tho, I sure don't have ANY practical experience with those big engined Bonanzas so am unable to say. On the plain ole early Bonanza 205s tho, we used to do it all the time. Roy didn't want his engines ran in the dust there in west Texas so we'd do what he said and stay on top of the dust layer over/on top of Lubbock's muny airport, talk with the tower, shut it off, pull it up to stop the prop and then glide down and land.

Nope, don't believe we ever did it with them, just empty returns/deadheading or hauling stiffs. (Lotta stories there with the latter one <g>)

Come to think of tho, do remember a couple of faith ones (different tho) with a Cessna 190.
