Russian airspace altitudes
      #269892 - 10/25/09 08:32 PM

Friday, on a flight from Newark to Bombay my colleague and I noticed that after we got light enough to climb, the in-seat system showed us at 37,000' everywhere except over Russia, where we were at 36,500. Is there something interesting about the Russian rules?

Thanks,
Jay

Over Russia they use meters. Your altitude was Flight Level 11,100 meters (36,400).

Thanks Bill. Still seem off. 11 km is 36,089', and we were at 36,500 (11.125 km). Do they issue altitudes like FL 11.1 ?

Thanks,
Jay

Altimeter will be at 1013 as opposed to 29.92.

I see! Of course that makes sense...many thanks Bill.

Is Russia the only place that works in metric flight levels?

China, too. Of course, in China, some areas use Qfe, others use Qnh. How'd you like to operate in Qfe in meters?

I think 1013 (1013.6, actually) is the same pressure as 29.92. At least it is on my altimeter.
