Staggerwing

After spendeing all week at OSH looking at planes including the new G-35 Ginger has decided that the only plane for her is a Beech 17 Staggerwing, preferrably a G model, oh what will I do. Anybody have any good leads on one? Or maybe someone should just shoot me (G)

Thanks Steph.

We saw the last one on your list at OSH and talked to him. He suggested we get one with a 985 if we are going to fly it around Leadville. The others look good. One of them in in Wis. and we may try to go see it before leaving the OSH area.

Dick,

Ginger has equisite taste in airplanes.

For a '30s era design, the ground handling isn't bad and in flight they are magnificent. Most all of the later models had the 450 hp R-985. I think it was the C model that had a the smaller Jacobs (and also had a smaller airframe). Before that engines were all over the place, with one of the first ones having something in excess of 600 hp and fixed gear. It was not particularly attractive. It's a 200 mph airplane and you can burn autogas.

Read James Gilbert's piece on the Staggerwing in his book _The Great Planes_, especially his description of feeling as if you are the god Mercury, with wings on your shoulders and feet.

You need one.

Fighting it is hopeless.

Warmest regards,
Rick

Ah, Leadville...one of my stranger memories came from there. I had my sailplane there at a soaring encampment circa 1980, and fell into conversation with a CFIA from Florida who had flown there to get the "Highest Airport" certificate. Eventually she asked me "What is this Continental Divide people keep talking about here?"

I tried to explain it to her for at least an hour, and failed miserably...;-)

Rick,
She wanted that yellow gullwing Stinson with the shell logo until she saw Jim Gormans yellow staggerwing. How did I get such a woman? and she says we can keep the 180.

Dick:
I am now going to go to OfficeMax and buy a new keyboard. Mine is breaking down from all the saliva dripping onto it!

There are a few "firsts" every guy remembers. ;) I can tell you exactly when and where I was when I saw my first Staggerwing. And the second time. And the third and fourth times, too. It is something beyond love.

If only...if only...

Please keep us voyeurs constantly apprised of your efforts. And be sure to tell your wife that she is, indeed, a goddess!

Very best regards,
Andy

Dick,

There is an alternative, of course, and that is to build one of these puppies.
