I am not sufficiently educated to read the article due to impingement of ads over the text, which won't disappear....

Another excellent use for VPN is security on public WiFi networks. Connect
to the WiFi, connect to your VPN provider, and local packet sniffing software
can't make sense of your internet traffic.

A few public networks block the VPN protocol, but some, like Amtrak, have
backpedaled on that. Blocking VPN serves at least two purposes: targeted
advertising; and blocking what would likely be inappropriate content in a
public place.

The downside is that it can be very slow. Amtrak's WiFi connection is via
what amounts to a mobile phone -- one phone per car for sure, perhaps one
phone per train -- I don't know. However, the additional slowing due to VPN
can be aggravating.

The German national railroad, Deutsche Bahn, and most hotels and airports
provide a decent connection.

https://www.cotse.net provides VPN as well as secure, feature-rich email, web
hosting, and other services. I have used them for at least a decade and am
completely satisfied.

And sites wonder why so many users install Adblock or Adblock Pro....

More info:

Why free VPNs are not a risk worth taking. Simply put, it takes money to run a VPN. If they're not getting it from you, just where are they getting their money? (Tor might be an exception since it seems to use the "collective" to hide who is going to what IP address.)

My apologies for your problems with ads. I've referenced several ads from PC Magazine on AVSIG before without any reported problems. I had one small IBM ad at the bottom on this article from PC Magazine. I have more ads with my paid subscriptions to WSJ, NTY and WaPo. I'm using Chrome and Win 10.

uBlock Origin is a much faster and smarter ad blocker than Adblock Plus. I
used the latter for years, but removed it after ten minutes' testing of
uBlock Origin.

Personally, I've used Adblock and have been happy. Adblock and Adblock Pro are two completely different programs. I do disable Adblock on trusted sites that have no advertising (such as Avsig) to reduce memory requirements.
