Randy & Fifi - First Flight
      #443802 - 10/11/17 04:45 PM Attachment (6 downloads)

So, most of us have heard Rnady's story about how "The Gang" all went to China Lake, picked out the B-29 out on the weapons range that had the best glass, and he flew a "test flight" out of the lakebed, all the way back to Texas. And, oh-by-the-way, it was his first ever flight piloting a B-29!

But, did you know there's a picture of what was our intrepid "test pilot's" takeoff that day? It turns out, noted Douglas engineer and master photographer Harry Gann got a call from Lloyd Nolan telling to get himself up to China Lake with his camera "because we need somebody to get pictures of Randy crashing that damn thing!"

Well, we know how it turned out. And here, with permission from Harry's son, Russ Gann, who is the curator of his dad's collection, is proof Rnady was lucky that day!

Best,
Andy

Prolly so, now if'n I could only find a couple of those lost logbooks! Anyhow, 2 Aug 71, 6 plus 28 enroute and the route between El Paso and Del Rio meb'be involved a while over somewhere where I don't think that they spoke English as a native language.

best, randy

You’re responsible for the first B-29 raid on Mexico, too?

Prolly so if you suscribe to that P-I-C thing but Lefty (Marvelous L) Gardner assured me that "man and boy, I've been flying this Marfa-Alpine-Del Rio segment for a l-o-n-g time". Looking back tho, guess "all's well that ends well", I don't think the Mexican Air Force had anything fast enough to catch us. But I do recall coming into Del Rio headed straight east! (Along about that time I reassigned Roger Baker to the co-pilot's duties/crew position).

Another thing I recall was that the BBC was on the airfield at Harlingen filming something or other for an English TV broadcast. Anyhow, the director of that film crew came over to us after we'd parked and sez - "I say, old chap, how much time do'ya have in Washingtons (that's what the RAF called their B-29s) and I remember consulting my wristwatch and replying to him "Unh - 6 hours and 28 minutes". Anyhow, mission complete, added another to the CAF's collection.

best, randy
