ZDNet: WSJ: Kaspersky software likely used in Russian-backed NSA breach

"Hackers working for the Russian government stole details of how the U.S. penetrates foreign computer networks and defends against cyberattacks after a National Security Agency contractor removed the highly classified material and put it on his home computer, according to multiple people with knowledge of the matter.

"The hackers appear to have targeted the contractor after identifying the files through the contractor’s use of a popular antivirus software made by Russia-based Kaspersky Lab, these people said."

The same article I referenced earlier.

Anti-virus (AV)programs by their very nature read files. While the AV is reading those files it stores a list of those files for future reference. If the AV vendor so chooses, it can request a list of the file names from the host computer. The AV vendor can than run that file list against a list of file names it needs. Getting the desired file is the simple part, the AV has the key to the door. It's a simple theory, slightly more complex to execute,....not really, it's just bits and bytes. :)

Where is that post? I missed it. All I see is where it was ordered off government machines. This one seems to indicate "why".

Doesn't matter. I had posted the WSJ article at the end of my Kaspersky post. Maybe Mike deleted it?
