The late Hod Taylor, who hooked me on sailplanes, was one of the first people to bail out of a P-38 by sliding under the "cheese knife"...they sent him on a tour of training bases to lecture on it.

That always worried me a lot. I figured that I'd roll it inverted, unfasten my harness, trim it nose down, put my foot on the yoke and push!

best, randy

Couple more thoughts on the Lighting. Only fighter that I took across Lake Michigan instead'a around tho. Was slow compared to the Mustang.

If you go to the next ones in the series, there's Tony LeVier demonstrating a loss of an engine on takeoff.

I served on a USN staff with another officer -Gary Burcham. He was from California and I think his father was a Lockheed test pilot and was killed in a P-38 test flight. Perhaps Milo Burcham?

Regards.

Dux -lot's of time in USN Lockheed patrol aircraft, P2V and P-3 types.

I also had some training time in what I think was a Lockheed T2V single engine jet with tip tanks.

Regards,

Dux

I wuz gonna tell'ya that it was Milo - but then I see you thought of it. And the Niiiiggggvvveeeeee raised the rear seat on some of its later T-33s to make it a T-33B? Chuckle, still remembering how we used to cause condensation to come out of the air conditioning outlets to cause snow in the T-bird's cockpits.

Here's one in civilian hands, still flying in 2011 according to Wiki. As Randy says, it's a T-33 with the rear seat raised to give the IP some visibility.

Renamed from TV-2 to T-33B in 1962.

Yup, like one of the guys from Brian/Bryan????? sez when they came up to REE to replace all of us B-25 IPs, "I guess those navy pukes needed all the help they could get" <g>

Made me think back to when I first checked out in the T-bird, used to chuckle when we'd turn the aileron boost off and then take it uo towards the limiting Mach and watch both aileron's trailng edges buzz! Young and stoooopid!

best, randy
