Cirrus ground parachute opening recently?
      #440685 - 07/18/17 06:08 PM

Hearing from untrustworthy sources (without further sources) that there was a lightning strike this week (today?) that caused the parachute to be deployed.

Any truth to that?

Happened today, apparently. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=685fKmvRZxI&feature=youtu.be

12:15PM EDT at Lynchburg, VA KLYH. The aircraft is reportedly a 2016 G5 model, with the electronic ignition system that is being retrofitted into the G2-G3 fleet via a SB as the aircraft go through their 10-year chute repack.

There's going to be a lot of fine-tooth combs going over this, I expect. Since it happened not he ground, there's some speculation that unless a SDR is filed, the FAA is not technically required to investigate. i would hope someone would.

in the meantime, I think I'll work on avoiding thunderstorms. ;)

Best,
Andy

And read again The Man Who Rode The Thunder in case you get a strike....

Yes, this one is going to be very, very interesting. There have been, apparently, other Cirrus's who have experienced hits, so this is very unusual. That much electricity, into a composite structure, with an enmeshed Faraday cage, with so many possible routings for that to go to ground. All it takes is one invisible fault in that route that somehow leads to the actuation system.

As usual, lots of profound misinformation, disinformation, fear, obfuscation and OWT's abounding everywhere.

Best,
Andy
