Squawk What?
      #440444 - 07/10/17 11:14 PM

One of our Cessna flyers who prefers to remain anonymous tells a cautionary tale about losing his radio. So, he decided to fly VFR all the way from the west coast to the east coast and back, using only uncontrolled airfields. Since his panel was placarded “Communication Loss – Squawk 7600” he did so all the way across the country, and back.

It's good to note that 7600 is one of the emergency codes, and rings bells and flashes lights in ATC facilities... and that occurred for his entire Cessna trip coast to coast to coast. When he returned to California, the FAA politely contacted him to ask that he not do that again. No harm, no foul, but a learning opportunity.

Ahem!

Paul

I was returning to Spartanburg one evening, still light , but fading. Approach held me off for a plane squawking 7600. He was far enough away that I cancelled and landed. While I was buttoning things up, a bonanza landed downwind ......at the same time a friend was landing head on in 58 Baron. The Baron blew two tires and went for the grass....all was Ok.

The Bonanza, on a VFR local flight could not communicate and was the 7600 traffic.

In a center that just makes the datablock say "RDOF", not a huge deal although mildly annoying. I'm surprised nobody called one of his destination airports after he landed to gently ask what was up, but on the other hand since they weren't actually working him the level of concern would have been reduced.

I once had an IFR aircraft on frequency that was being operated by a couple of clueless meatballs with a stuck mic. After an extended and highly NSFW intercom discussion about how their radios seemed to be all effed up, one of them remembered they were supposed to do something with the transponder - "we'd better squawk 7700!" <insert facepalm here...>

They did, which generated a phone call from the USAF about 30 seconds later asking what the emergency was, followed by multiple calls from other controllers asking the same thing. We eventually got their attention and sorted things out, but you'd have sworn Laurel and Hardy had gotten pilot's licenses...

I remember it as squawk 7700 for 1 minute, then 7600. 7700 to get everyone's attention, then 7600 to tell them what was going on.

Only time I did this was when we lost the radio in a T-37 on a cross country.

Oh, that must have been a fun report to write. Completely factual while making sure every stupid thing they did was included. <g>

I'm so glad I have a DVR and can skip those guys along with many other :-) To bad we can't use those in real life at times.

I remember that, too, but it's not in the AIM that way anymore. Straight to 7600, now.

No need for a report - just another Stupid Pilot Trick, generally completely resolved with, "Are you two done yet?" :-)

The proper response to "I don't know" is, "Third base!"
