FAA - Where customers come last (sign says so!)
      #439141 - 06/01/17 07:54 PM Attachment (114 downloads)

I visited the local FAA office today to pick up some paperwork from the MIDO for a friend. A found this sign a bit hard to believe.

O'S, IIRC that was the result becasue of some concerns that they'd had many-many years ago after 9-11.

While Randy has a good explanation, I don't know as I'd find it hard to believe at all.

Not to pick on the FAA, or even the Feds, but for any large organization that doesn't live or die by customer access, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to find public accommodations sacrificed or marginalized for additional staff parking.

John -- Same crap at the Eastern Region. I've had the pleasure of making the long walk to the front door in a driving rain going to meetings there. It's ridiculous for non-operational facilities (not to mention that I can park pretty close to our tower when I go there), let's get on with life.

At many ATC facilities the visitor parking is outside the gate, and it can be quite a hike to the building. I hit 18 of the 20 centers at one time or another, and none of them had the same security process. Go figure...

Scott, I did the NDPER biz and the airline check piot biz for many years. Was to a lot of FAA offices and when I inquired about it, always ended up in the end with the same answer although many of the people inside really didn't know, it pre-dated their days with the agency. Security, not allowing cars/people to park immediately next to the building.

So the employees' own cars were their armor against bombings...guess that makes sense <g>.

Real story is, the employees wanted to park close to not walk so far, and came up with the "security" story as a reason why this was best. :)

And, we can park directly in front of our post offices, social security offices, IRS offices, etc.....

I can deal with some security-premised outlying parking for critical infrastructure (e.g., ARTCCs, Tracons, etc.), but not for FSDOs and Regions.

Most businesses I know ask employees not to park in front and take up that space all day. I've actually pointed that out to management at one place; that employees were blocking all the spaces up front. It changed very promptly.
Yes, I understand security concerns, but there are better ways and disgruntled employees would know how to circumvent it all.

Reminds me of my computer field service days. I would sometimes cover the DC
area for extended local absences. This thread reminded me of the Army Topographic Command (name right?). I carried in my briefcase, tool case, and
parts case uninspected. On the way out, security went through everything.

Had I been carrying something nasty in, I would have had to make certain I
left it there.

Yes, reading A Bridge Too Far. Dutch underground is trying to determine German movements west of Arnhem (Oosterbeek actually) where a new headquarters is being set up. At great personal risk, underground member tries to walk by to see if new headquarters has any markings. Sentry stops him and he says he needs to get through because he works at a local gas station. Waves him through; walks past three other sentries who don't even stop him. Sees the flag markings of a major headquarters which can only be one German general. Of course, he reports a major HQ is moving there and allied command doesn't pay any attention.

Folklore in the Formula 1 racing community says you can get into the pits easily by putting on some greasy coveralls, picking up a crankshaft, running frantically up to the gate and yelling at the guard in fake Italian...;-)

Once upon a Midnight Requisition, a co-conspirator and I used a more secure
variant of a trick I had seen in a comic book years ago.

The maintenance battalion had something we needed and which they would not
release to us. Few people wore rank insignia in Vietnam due to snipers
looking for high-value targets. The co-conspirator groomed himself like an
officer, put on a freshly-laundered no-rank uniform, and abruptly confronted
the gate guard.

SENTRY! THE PASSWORD!

APPLE PIE, SIR! [salutes exchanged]

Very good. Carry on.

My guy disappeared. A little while after the sentry had been relieved, I
showed up and gave the password to the next guard shift.

A few years back, we were camping in the North 40 at Oshkosh, and my wife wanted to bring her car to the area. She simply put a magnetic yellow flashing light on the roof and drove through the north gate near the hotel, waving at the entry guard.

It helped that she was driving a beige Buick that looked like something the government would have. It also helped that there was a vendor's decal in the windshield (which was phony).

Ralph (et al.), recently saw a YT video where two young Aussies set out to prove that you could go ANYWHERE if you wear a yellow hi-viz safety vest.

Pretty much true. Past barricades, secure areas, treated themselves to a couple of 'sold-out' concerts. Pics to prove it.

I think the only thing better is to also carry a clipboard.

Many years ago (20-25?) was attending a survival course being put on for U.S. Customs at Davis Monthan AF Base in Tucson. We went off base for lunch. Coming back, the instructor showed the gate guard ID and we were waved through. As we are pulling away he showed me his AAA membership card. Said it worked every time. Suspect security may be a bit tighter these days. <shrug>

That worked for me when I was squadron historian back in 1970. I also had a stopwatch. No one ever asked where I was going or what I was doing (no where in particular, and not much) and it was the only extra duty I recall.

Ya'know, might very well be so, tho the guy that told me that was the head man there, I didn't wanna take whatever it was that I was PO'ed about (I forget now) to anyone lower on the totem pole.

In high school, an enterprising fellow student (side note: one of three from my 45 person 8th grade class that was born on the same day in the same hospital ward as me) put on gray overalls, grabbed a hard-hat, a clip board, and a long power cord over his shoulder and got back stage into Bruce Springsteen's dressing room a few hours before the show. He had painted a 24" square painting of Bruce. During the show, Bruce pulled it out, held it up, and said "thank you" to "whoever left this in my dressing room." Pretty neat.

As a new-hire I had to go over to center to get my picture taken?? I drove in the driveway, which had no sign - until I got to the building where I saw the one-way sign. I got an a$$-chewing from the security guard, with a gun - even though I was 'one of them'.

While that may be 'funny', in reality the 'in the trench' workers wonder the same type of things. Eventually you just give up wondering and realize it is the dysfunction of working for the government.

Even though I had NTSB ID, it wasn't FAA ID, so I was the "wrong kind of federal employee" and thus often, but not always, given the full ants-at-a-picnic treatment when visiting centers. We'd usually work with somebody from NATCA on accidents, but generally they were from a different center so the guard didn't know them, either - but they had FAA ID. One center was putting me through the mill while the NATCA guy watched, and once they got through jerking me around the guard asked who was driving the rental car. When I told him I was, he said he'd have to search it before letting us in. I asked if he had to search it if the NATCA guy was driving - "No." So I tossed the keys to my pal and we drove on in.

Doh.

Yeah, "sense of humor" isn't usually a selection criteria for security guards...
