Travolta Donates B-707 To Museum
      #439026 - 05/29/17 07:49 PM Attachment (63 downloads)

AVWEB

"John Travolta is hanging up his four-barred Qantas uniform and donating his personal Boeing 707 to an Australian museum, which will restore it. Travolta said he plans to personally deliver the Boeing to the Historic Aircraft Restoration Society (HARS) in Illawarra, New South Wales, after some maintenance on the aircraft. Travolta discussed the possibility of sending the aircraft to the museum in 2009 when he was invited to fly the HARS Super Constellation. He decided to let the jet go this year and the museum was happy to take it off his hands. "I am truly excited by this project and am just so pleased that this beautiful aircraft, for which I obviously have very fond memories, will continue to fly well into the future," Travolta said in a statement."

IIRC, that one was/is a 138-B. A "dutch roller"!

I think that when Boeing was showing off their (then) new B-707, the test pilot did a complete roll -perhaps twice, keeping positive g forces during the event?

Long time ago, and not sure this is a true event or just ole pilot talk. I also wonder if the original B-707 with the first JT-3D, was not a fan jet?

Regards,

Dux -cool and cloudy Minneapolis. I guess it beats the 101 degrees in Tucson.

>>(then) new B-707, the test pilot did a complete roll -perhaps twice<<

That was Alva (Tex) Johnston, had previousy been with Bell. Bill Allen watched it from his yacht out on the bay, been watching the unlimited hydroplane boat races with guests of Boeing, later asked Tex "what in the world were you doing?" "Selling airplanes, Mr. Allen".

>>true event or just ole pilot talk<<

True. One roll only.

>>also wonder if the original B-707<<

IIRC, NWA had the first fans, 720s.

best, randy

He's been a pretty class act throughout his ownership of that beautiful machine - nice way to finish it up.

Would love to be a crew member on the ferry trip to the museum.

Guess that one can never be absolutely sure of conversations from that long ago ago but when I was sent up to Offutt to the Stan Bd there we took a C-54 out to Seattle once. At that time I had not the foggiest of notions that I'd ever fly a King Cobra and spent some time up there, I forget now what it was for, meb'be the KC-135s, I do remmeber that one of our Offutt people from up on the hill was Col. Guy Townsend who I flew with several times. At any rate, SAC/USAF was a really BIG customer of the Boeing Corp. and i guess that their (Boeing) Flt Ops people must'a been told to pay some amount of attention to us yokels from Omaha, dunno. At any rate, do recall he (Alva) told us about some of his earlier days at Bell and that stuff. I do recall him telling me some stuff about the Cobra's driveshaft (which I sure put to use years later) and also the initial trepedation that he'd felt when Bill Allen called him in the next day. Told me that it'd be sorta like me telling LeMay something or other!

best, randy

IIRC, it's ex-QANTAS (Queensland And New Territories Air Service).
