All,
Done flew to San Diego last Tue. to look at and do a pre-buy on a Cub in El Cajon that Patty Haley pointed out to me. Been going slow due to owners work schedule. Pending a Compression check this morning and final negotiations it’ll be an adventurous 2,300 mi east bound.

Regards,
Tom Charlton

That sounds like quite an adventure. Don't forget the camera.

You will probably want to fly along I-10 to minimize terrain elevation until
you reach Texas. Be VERY careful not to stray even close to the Mexican
border. I suggest you remain north of V12.

Anne should be able to give you plentty of good advice about flying an
altitude-limited, relatively short-range aircraft in the southwest.

Other than that, bring a camera, lean for best power during runup at high
density altitudes, and be ready to wait out wind and weather as necessary.

Oh yeah. Bring us the story!

I have seen a carb with mixture on a Cub, but usually wired rich.
>>>>lean for best power<<<<

May not be possible...with most Cubs.

Jeff

nothing clever to say right now...

Hi Jeff,
Till now I’d never come across a Cub with a mixture control. This one is retrofitted with a C-85 engine from something like a Cessna 140. I think many if not most small Continentals were fitted with a Marvel Schebler carburetor. Any that had provision for a mixture control are required to be wired full rich.

Some were fitted with the Stromberg NA-S3 with mixture control as was this one. These have a very short and sensitive one inch full travel mixture control. My understanding is it is possible to lean for better power at higher altitude. Perhaps get to test that over the high desert just east of here.

Hi Scott,
Friends don’t let friends buy airplanes<g>.

Hey Scott . . . maybe we could do a formation flight over the Dilute gang. I think there’s perhaps a fifteen knot area of overlap in the airspeed ranges of a C-210 and a J-3 Cub?

Hi Ray,
I-8 till I-10 intercept. Will definitely hug the interstates except to circumvent certain airspace. Also more opportunities for landing if mister motor quits<ng>.

It’s already an adventure here at Gillespie Airport. Very neat place with a large number of hangars with interesting people and airplanes. Homebuilts and antiques galore.

Hi Mase,
On my list to purchase for the trip:
* El Cheep-o camera.
* El Cheep-o watch. (haven’t worn a watch since retirement<g>)

Mase, do you live anywhere close to where Gillespie Airport is? Or are you up closer to Las Angeles?

Regards,
Tom Charlton
