Looking for a J-3 Cub to purchase
      #433948 - 12/27/16 04:01 PM

Hi all,
Wife Melody says go for it! So . . . I’m officially looking for a J-3 to purchase. Haven’t flown since several years before retirement in 2012. Long time ago flew lots of tailwheels including several Cubs. Now my only flying desire is to revert back to some quality time in a J-3.
Looking to see if anything jumps out at me in any of the usual places like T-A-P or Barnstormers. At this point I just want to fly and not get involved in rebuilding an airplane so my Preferences are:
* Relatively recent fabric.
* Good airframe.
* Low time on C-85 or 90.
* Legal paperwork.
* Doesn’t need to be an award winner, just yellow with a black lighting stripe<grin>.
* Oh . . . and hopefully located not too far from my home in central Florida.

Regards,
Tom Charlton

If y6ou do find one near your Florida abode I'm sure you'll check carefully for corrosion. I flew a Super Cub for a few hours and then we found corrosion all over.
BTW--I am jealous!

Hi Ralph,
Hmm . . . 70 year old airplane? Think’n corrosion might be a factor no matter where from<grin>?

Quote:

Don’t be jealous just yet. Still got lots’a hoops to jump through. Stick n rudder skills likely not a problem however it’s been about ten years since I acted as PIC.

Got to find some hapless flight instructor to do me a flight review. I do AOPA FIRCs every two years but I’ve forgotten so much.
Ha . . . last time I flew we still had actual FAA Flight Service Stations. Seems I heard things are different now<grin>?

Tom -- Look up Paul Bertorelli for some brush up training. He's got a J3 over there by Naples, or Venice, or some ferrign sounding place on the West Coast. I can ship his email to you separately, if you'd like it for use now or later.

Another busy cub instructor, owns her own is Sarah Rovner.
Can locate her on Facebook, she's a friend of mine. She does ferry work plus now instructs in the CRJ sim after over a year on that bird.
Probably find her info at Full Throttle Aviation.

Hi Scott,
Got a fair amount of time in various Cubs but last I flew one about 44 years ago. Ya send me Bertorelli’s email. Pretty sure he has a Cub at Venice which is only a one hour drive south of me. Hmm . . . wonder if Paul is a CFI and does flight reviews?

Hi Scott,
Got it. Thanks!
Hope you’re surviving the seasonal cool weather.

At some point I’ll likely give Paul B. a shout. Lots of research to do before pulling the trigger on a J-3 purchase. Compiling a list of features, upgrades, modifications and which are must have –v- like to have. Haven’t even inquired about insurance yet. Step by step.

Tom,
Let me throw in a "drive by" here to make your life either more complicated or simpler: Take a look at the Legend Cub LSA's. Think of them as "J-3's, only safer and more modern." By "more modern," I mean made on the line with a lot of the features you may probably want and with modern manufacturing techniques that make them less prone to the issues that a 70-year old airframe might demand if you. Plus, like the early J-3's can now be, they're LSA, which means a lot of the usual hurdles are not there.

Just a thought. I've seen some gorgeously restored J-3's that cost more than a used Legend. Just saying. ;)

Best,
Andy

Hi Andy,
Yup, Legend Cub, Carbon Cub . . . Just so it’s yellow with a black lightning stripe<grin>. Actually I would consider those also. However I suspect my best value (ok least cost) will be a well restored original J-3. Got some due diligence to do.

One big issue here is there are just –no- hangars open in the area right now. Likely need to start with an open air covered shelter and get on several hangar list.

So true, also wood spar V/S metal spar. Mine's a 39 woodspar. Lightweight elgible also and if you need a copy of the Reed "clipped wing" I have that engineering drawing (altered struts, door, etc).

Hi Randy,
Didn’t know you had a Cub.
Ya wood/metal either is fine by me although think I’ll lean toward metal.

Reed "clipped wing"

Flew one, one time, many moons ago. Bit higher stall speed but would be fun to have one for some very limited, old man style, (+g) Scare-o-batics”

Hijacking my own thread:
Flew the Reed "clipped wing" with long gone friend, Emerson Avery. Em had flown for a time with the Cole Brothers Air Shows then instructed at what was the Bartow Army/Air Base. Em is the one who’d checked me out in the Stearman and also did my seaplane training. Think it was the early days of the “Biennial Flight Review” I rented a Decathlon and got Em to sign me off after we did some ah . . . maneuvers. Em eventually got himself kilt whilst instructing in a Twin Bee with Brown’s Seaplane Base.
I’d met Em when I started instructing at the pilot mill flight school “Bartow Air Academy” in late 1970. At one point we had eighteen instructors. A few of which had previously worked at the old Air Base, and settled in the area, after the Air Base had closed. Actually, over time, I met quite a number of previous Air Base instructors who’d settled in the area in various capacities.

Tom Charlton

Some differences in the tubing v/s chrome-molly construction enables it to meet the LSA weight specs. Got the first set of wings from Duane and Judy, had been on one of their Cole Bros. Cubs. Blue & white, somebody must'a liked them better than me I, I guess, cuz they were stolen from Southport before I got them installed on that Cub I'd bought from one of our NOR mechs.

Yup, Bartow, when I was in USAF cadets in T-6s at Moultrie/Bevo Howard's "College of Aeronautical Knowledge" at Spence we always told our classmates who'd been sent to Bartow that they were in the "Banana Belt"/"Sun Belt" down there!

Tomasina, sitting here now reading this stuff and your reply triggered some o-l-d story that Connie Edwards told me, that guy is a continuous source of jokes, my stomach ached after flying with him from laughing. Story involved an Arkansas farmer herding a bunch of hogs down the road. Problem is that right now all I can think of/remember is the punch line "So - what's time to a hog"? Duz anyone reading this remember that joke? It seemed appropos at the time since we were somewhere between Newfoundland and the Azores with the PBY at 105 knots!

Connie's got a continous never ending series of jokes, same as some of the DC-3 captains I flew with in my early years at North Central, I'd come back off a four day trip out in the western division with my belly hurting from constantly laughing at some of those guys. His son (BTW BOTH great pilots), "Tex" though was completely serious and paid attention to everything while I was teaching him to fly the T-6 and Cat.

Prolly the thing though that absolutely sticks in my mind about that trip to England is after we'd left Lages (Terciera) coming back and, while rumbling along not very high over the water Tex spotted the island of San Miguel, ahead. So I sez "OK, Tex, I got it for a little while here" and increased to climb power. It was just barely daylight/dawn and I climbed just high enough to clear the land and flew down the main street of some little town there. Marty Caidin was sitting in the left hand observer's bubble in the rear end and right after he saw that little church's belltower go by he called me on the interphone and sez "Cripes Randy, you sure shortened up THEIR night"! Chuckle.

Good ole days!

Hi Randy,

So I expect that was a –one- pass deal<g>?

Not much of a teller-of-jokes my own self (not bright enough) but –do- get, been party to, and appreciate most humor. Seen and heard a lot of really funny stuff over the years in our potentially “moment away from disaster” world of aviat’n.

Yup Tomasina, many just don't fully realize what a major effort it is to correct whatever I'd just written (just check over there to the left and "yo conosco!)

And yes, we just "kept on'a truckin" towards the west and - eventually - Bermuda after that low pass. IIRC, that leg was the longest that I've ever flown, I think 18 1/2 or 19 hours or so. I do remember that the next night when we got close to Bermuda Connie sez to me "Ya know something Ferd, meb'be we should stay up here a little longer cuz I've always wanted to put a "1" in my logbook, 1 day that is".

Speaking of Connie, does he still have that PBY Cat down in Texas? Does it get flown?
I knew he found a buyer for all those Fighter planes he had from that movie deal.

Got to fly a short flight yesterday in a really nice J-3 with a C85. Belongs to a friend of a friend. They forced me into the back seat. Beautiful 3,400ft grass strip. Did a takeoff and landing, a few wingovers and some tight turns. Wa-hoo! Dam that was just as much fun as I remember! Ha . . . first time I ever flew a Cub with an intercom & headset!
Best no one leave their Cub in an unlocked hangar . . . T.C. is on the prowl<g>.

You're not in the right place at the moment, but try a Cub on skis some time.

I once had an hour of dual in a 65hp J-3 on floats, with an instructor who was a lardbutt like me...that poor thing managed to get off the water somehow <g>.

Never did skis but, back about 1965, me and a buddy flew his T-Cart on wheels, off of the ice, on Sun Rise Lake, NH. We even landed at night in bright moonlight. Was pure magic. We met and became friends with a family that lived at the lake year round. What great memories.

Hope all’s well with you and yours this winter in Philly.

Have you thought of a Super Cub?

Of course in Cub yellow with black stripe.

Same fun airframe, and you don't have to push the throttle up to simulate less HP.

Hi Terry,
Moot point but I’ve never flown a Super Cub. Also, to be honest, need to keep the cost down. Ain’t no cheap Super Cubs. For a Cub that hopefully won’t need any major work, for a while, I expect will set me back in the $35/$40K range.

I’d consider a Wag-Aero Cubby though.

A basic J-3 with its cylinders hang’n out in the breeze would suit me well. I will opt for at least a C85-12 for our warm humid Florida summer afternoons.

Tom Charlton

Tom C:

Funny thing about airplanes. No matter what you want to buy, someone will suggest buying one step up.

I've flown Super Cubs a bit--was backup patrol pilot for the highest-time pilot who ever lived, Ed Long--and enjoyed them. Flown J-3 Cubs less, but that's one I'd love to own. Also flown a Luscombe a good bit, and enjoyed it--TaylorCraft, too. There's just something about the old, small, slow tailwheel aircraft.

I have never flown a J-3. I know HORRORS. :)

I have some time in Super Cubs, both 115 and 150 HP versions.

Solo from the front. Flaps. And POWER, especially the 150 version.

And there are the Cub clones.

But price is a factor.

Terry C:

You are dead right about the Super Cub. If I was gonna work one, the Super Cub would make way more sense.

OTOH, considering cost, fuel use, ailerons, flaps and starter to maintain--if it's strictly for the fun of it I'd still go with the J-3.

It's just magical.

Hi Ralph,

I always liked the long-nose perspective from the back. Easier alignment of fuselage with ground-track down the runway.

Also fun with first time passengers . . . what? You mean the pilot flies from the back seat? Oh my. Then there’s the hand propping thing<g>.

I always liked the obvious connection, in a Cub, of turnbuckles’n cables linking the slipstream over the ailerons to my fingers. You can feel every little burble of air flowing past the airplane and controls.

Tom Charlton

Hi Ralph J.

Ha, having been a lineman, back in time, done did that<G>.

Seems I’ve heard that some larger airport FBO’s get very squirrely when they see you hand propping. Although having been around awhile . . . I kind’a get that.

One thing I’ve discovered is that, on a number of J-3s, if the Continental has a -12 accessory case there’s an STC to equip with one of the new light weight starters and batteries. No generator so it’s not considered to have an electrical system with attendant ADS-B requirement.

Hi Mase,
Thanks . . . but . . . well there are Champ guys n there are Cub guys. Maybe if they’d painted the champ yellow with a black lightning stripe? Man, that’d piss off both camps<grin>.

I guess it’s guys like me that keep driving the price up on Cubs. Likely pay a $10,000 premium for Cub vs Champ.

Let’s see:
* The Champ cost less.
* Easier to get in & out of.
* Roomier, more comfortable cabin.
* Solo from front seat.

Dunno, must be the Cubs’ exposed engine cylinders, Dutch doors and yellow paint<g>

Also, propping a Champ, you are a long way from the cockpit, a Cub, prop from behind, you are almost in the cockpit.

If I owned one today I would have a tow hitch or carry a short cable with a hook to clip it to a tie down. Release after idle...

Hi Jeff,
Yup, and with good impulse mags firing at TDC, less likely for backfire removing the first joint of your fingertips and usually only takes a gentle flip past compression for commencement.

Concur.
And furthermore . . . I’ve heard that some larger FBOs get a bit wonkie, these days, seeing someone hand propping. But I get that. Precautions need to be taken. Dam things will go fly’n by their ownself.

Hi Ray,
And the airport dog “Aileron”<g>

Ha, back in the 1970/80s worked / flew out of an office at KBOW. We had this dirty, dingy, white indoor/outdoor mascot cat name of “Parallax” (we were in the business of making maps using stereo imagery) She liked to lurk in the bushes by the sidewalk at the FBO next door to us. She’d do a hit –n- run on any stranger walking by. Grab them on the back of the leg calf and run like the dickens.

Like most any cat she’d jump in any vehicle door left ajar. As I recall: one day she got an airplane ride most of the way to Daytona. They turned around and brought her back. Meow.

Tom Charlton

Hi Tom.I have been up in a J-3, just once. A former BF has a Super Cruiser, which I spent many hours in. Would love to have a Piper of my own one day. I finally heard back from Mike LaFrance. Sorry that took so long. The cub he is selling has 36 hours and is asking 45K for it. Would you like his number?

Hi Patty, thanks.

Sure, send phone # via PM or here on the forum.
Or give Mike my email and ask him if he’d like to send info on his Cub.
( avi8tor.tom [the at symbol here] gmail.com )

Most recent thinking on J-3 Cub must have -vs- nice to have considerations

Must have:
* Paper work in order.
* Fabric cover that has potential to last awhile.
* Yellow W/ black trim.
* C-85 or greater Continental engine w/ good potential remaining life
* Impulse mags.
* Reasonable assurance airframe tubing in good condition
* Sealed struts.
* Grove Brakes.
* 1,220lb gross wt.

Nice to have:
* Metal prop
* Alum spars
* Extra in-wing fuel tank
* Purchase not too far from home
* -12 accessory case w/ starter.

Regards,
Tom Charlton

3100'???????

For a Cub???

You can probably do at least 3 touch and goes on one pass. :)

I got checked on in an Aero Club Citabria at Barksdale AFB. 12000' runway, so IIRC, we got 9 touch and goes on one pass. Climbs were to 50'.

It would be an interesting test.

Larger wing with less HP, versus Smaller wing with more HP.

Of course a Super Cub would be even better. Large wing, more HP, and FLAPS. :)

All,
Done flew to San Diego last Tue. to look at and do a pre-buy on a Cub in El Cajon that Patty Haley pointed out to me. Been going slow due to owners work schedule. Pending a Compression check this morning and final negotiations it’ll be an adventurous 2,300 mi east bound.

Looking for a J-3 Cub to purchase [Re: Tom Charlton]
      #435491 - 02/11/17 01:59 PM

You will probably want to fly along I-10 to minimize terrain elevation until
you reach Texas. Be VERY careful not to stray even close to the Mexican
border. I suggest you remain north of V12.

Anne should be able to give you plentty of good advice about flying an
altitude-limited, relatively short-range aircraft in the southwest.

Other than that, bring a camera, lean for best power during runup at high
density altitudes, and be ready to wait out wind and weather as necessary.

Oh yeah. Bring us the story!

Hi Jeff,
Till now I’d never come across a Cub with a mixture control. This one is retrofitted with a C-85 engine from something like a Cessna 140. I think many if not most small Continentals were fitted with a Marvel Schebler carburetor. Any that had provision for a mixture control are required to be wired full rich.

Some were fitted with the Stromberg NA-S3 with mixture control as was this one. These have a very short and sensitive one inch full travel mixture control. My understanding is it is possible to lean for better power at higher altitude. Perhaps get to test that over the high desert just east of here.

Hi Scott,
Friends don’t let friends buy airplanes<g>.

Hey Scott . . . maybe we could do a formation flight over the Dilute gang. I think there’s perhaps a fifteen knot area of overlap in the airspeed ranges of a C-210 and a J-3 Cub?

I spent a week with Sue Critz at ELP years ago. She wanted me to see the VOR

Hi Patty,

Sorry to keep everyone in suspense. It’s been a bit of a whirl-wind of dashing to San Diego, Pre purchase inspection, getting my act together etc.

02/08/17, Wed : Flew to San Diego
02/09/17, Thu: Spent day doing J-3 Cub pre-buy inspection
02/10/17, Fri: Did a 1hr afternoon flight with owner.
02/11/17, Sat: Did compression check and agreed on price.
02/12/17, Sun: Nice ride to Brown Field and tour around San Diego in a pristine Luscombe Sedan, Drove to Aircraft Spruce in Corona to buy handheld com radio and "ifly" GPS. Bought lithium battery for extended avionics power.
02/13/17, Mon: Transfer purchase funds. Tinker with Cub, figure how to stash stuff for the trip home.
02/14/17, Tue: Install in Cub: Lash-up com radio, GPS, battery & cabling, Cabin heat cable. Service brakes. (cabin heat has very effectively kept my left foot toasty<g>)
02/15/17, Wed: Fly from Gillespie Field to overnight in Yuma, AZ.
02/16/17, Thu: Fly from Yuma, AZ ~ Marana, AZ ~ overnight in Las Cruces, NM.
02/17/17, Fri: Put the Cub in the barn due to rising winds and forecast storm system.
02/18/17, Sat: Fly from Las Cruces ~ Ft Stockton ~ overnight in Kerrville, TX
02/19/17, Sun: Anticipating deteriorating weather forecast.

* Generally following I-8 then joined I-10. With building confidence in the power plant been taking more short-cuts across the boonies. (And man-o-man there some boonies in the south west)
* C-85 starts easy and runs very strong and smooth. Been cruising mostly 5,500 ~ 7,500 MSL
* 2,400 RPM / 79 mph indicated.
* Been getting light to good tailwinds. 85 sometimes 95 ground speeds.
* Done one 3.4 hr leg and a couple of 3.2hr legs. (22 gal / 5 gph)
* The view out the windows of a J-3 Cub of the American South West is spectacular!

Regards,
Tom Charlton (in the midst of a challenging adventure)

Hi Patty,
Thanks for the point-out on this one.
I was look'n all over the USA for the right one to buy.
Other than distance from home it met all of my criteria:
* C-85-12 (Can be equipped with a starter if desired)
* Recent rebuild on engine.
* New fabric covering.
* Extra10 gal fuel tank in the wing.
* All new control cables.
* sealed struts.
* Upgraded disk brakes.

It's been running really good and is very easy to start.

Southern CA, AZ, NM and western TX incredibly beautiful from the Cub!
Weathered in in Kerrville, TX at the moment. Strong gusty winds low ceilings and rotten visibilities most of the day. Almost headed out mid-afternoon but discretion prevailed.

Dave, over the years, aviation has provided so many fascinating and disparate challenges for me, IMC being one of many. I’m so grateful to have been able to indulge so many of them: Seaplanes, Sailplanes, Aerobatics, Multi engine, Sling-Wings, Charter operations, Dope –n- fabric work, Flight instruction, ultra-lights, mowing airport grass, Beech 18s, Cessna 208s, Stearman biplane and about fifty other kinds of airplanes, even the occasional Piper Cub. The list of fun is far longer than that, it’s just that it’s all been so good. But mainly it’s the people, what amazing people one comes to know in our special fraternity.

Hi Jeff,

Today was Brenham, TX ~ Jennings, LA. 7,500’ alt moderate tailwind, probably averaged 90 mph GS.

Been chase ‘n the tails of this system for several days. Overnighting in Jennings.
, LA tonight. Each day have to await mid-day for departure and only able to get in maybe a 180kt leg before I catch up to it again.

Hi Randy,
Was proceed ’n along east bound this afternoon in my newly acquired J-3 Cub and dropped in to Jennings, LA for fuel.

Came across a Cajun guy (I can barely understand what he’s say’n) name of “Aubrey Vidrine” Runs an FBO here, has a NA T-6 and says he’s an old P-51 flyer. Says he hasn’t seen you in a long time (almost said “in a coon’s age” but thought better of it) for me to tell ya hi and was ask’n how’s Randy doin?

Any how, is a real friendly guy, as many Cajuns are, and loaned me a car to get to the hotel for the night.

Tom C:

Hey--if you're still in Pensacola and have time, go by Pensacola Aviation Center and tell Bill Hudgens (the owner) I suggested you say hello. I've known Bill since he was in hiigh school and we were both working for his father (Bob) owner at Montgomery (AL) Aviation. Bob was one of my heroes and teachers.

I remember him from Montgomery. I sat at Pensacola Aviation yesterday for about 4 hours, great FBO....pizza and hot dogs, or crew car if needed.
It was raining all day, so we opted for the free food and a nap.

Today was Jennings, LA. ~ Picayune, MS ~ Defuniak Springs, FL.

Mostly down in the weeds below the cloud bases from 900’ ~2,000’ alt. Busy weaving my way through an airspace obstacle course. Put me over some very remote Loosianna swamps. Don’t quit now baby. Thank goodness for a borrowed Garmin GPS 496, but still keep’n a finger on a, strip-folded, sectional chart. Getting into more of a headwind with that low pressure off my right wing. Probably averaged 75 mph GS. The whole dammed FL peninsula covered in showers so Defuniak was the end of the road.

No more than got the Cub in a barn again tonight and another Cub landed! This guy and his 11yo son are headed to Punta Gorda, FL. He’s an Ag-Pilot / Corp-Pilot / A&P. Just bought a ragged out Cub to fix up and flip/sell. So anyhow we shared the “crew-car” to the hotel and also went to dinner together. Small world of aviation, we have friends from the past in common.

[rant] I hate self-serve av fuel. Why can’t it be as simple as filling up my Jeep???? [/rant] Also didn’t help that two credit card companies are keep’n too good a watch on my nation spanning purchases.

Hi Mac,
Pretty quiet place during my visit. Café in the process of being renovated. Owner complained that corporate jet traffic has diminished dramatically.

No crew car nor rental cars available. Had a very good mech diagnose and fix a couple of damp spark plug wires. Late afternoon, dropped whatever he was doing, spent a good hour helping me. Asked him how much for his time . . . sez . . . oh how bout $40.00? I wrote him a check for $50. And he had one of his mechanics drop me off at the hotel and pick me up in the morning.

T’was. Just got home this late afternoon. I measured 2,287sm / 30.6hr / 11 fuel stops. My hat’s off to anyone who’s done a trip like this. Thank goodness my Cub had a 10gal wing fuel tank and extra climb power. Many areas in the desert SW have a serious sparsity of fuel stops.

Read up about damp spark plug wires. How does one solve that issue? On a Cub I mean, with everything out in the breeze. Just wondering.

Patty, damp spark plug wires? WD-40! Just spray it on the wires.

The WD stands for Water Dispersant, what it was originally designed for in
the Space Program many years ago.

Lot’s of tailwheel years ago in a wide ranging variety. But sure knocked the rust off me Cub rudder boots. Even had a few cross wind events. But a Cub will handle all that stuff if you wag the controls just right<g>!

Hi Ralph,
Well, now there’s an idea!
As I’m sure you know, generally only need brakes for engine run-up and short radius turns. I can hold the brakes for a mag check but when reaching forward for the carb heat . . . well . . . the ankles just don’t work that way<g>!

Also, anybody that needs brakes during the landing roll in a Cub needs some tutor ‘n

Shoot, had that sucker all the way up to 7,500 come’n round El Paso<g>. Also did a number of legs at 5,500’ The C-85, and cold air, climbed her up quite well. Didn’t fly low till the scud in Loosiana and points east.

T’was February and I did have me long-johns on and several additional layers. We’d rigged up the cabin heat control just prior to the journey. Didn’t expect much heat but it did make a difference . . . to my left foot –n- ankle. Blood circulation distributed that to the rest of me . . . sort’a<ng>.

Gil,

I recall that much of the time on the ground, in the evenings and mornings before flight, I felt a low-level anxiety about winds, weather, fuel stops and other uncertainties that lie ahead. But every flight, once airborne, that all went away and enjoyed the view. Was generally very comfortable: Had a big, ugly ole chunk of temper foam to sit on.

Patty, WD-40 is occasionally mentioned on a machining forum I belong to as a
cure for everything from frozen bearings to liver cancer.

And I then always mention it consists of 50% mineral spirits (paint thinner)
and less than 10% light machine oil. The rest is liquid propellant and
about 1% of their "snake oil".

The WD-40 company has a list of about 400 problems customers claim it
solves. Just to cover all bases, it bought 3-In-One oil company about 20
years or so ago. <g>

Interesting. I recall I heard it has some sort of fish oil in it too. Thus the smell. Guess that's the snake oil.

Good for many things, but lubricating is not one of them.

For spark plug wires, I would use one of the silicone sprays. Works well, should last longer.

Looking for a J-3 Cub to purchase [Re: Tom Charlton]
      #436095 - 03/01/17 10:26 PM

Tom, many, many years ago (1958) when I was an IBM Customer Engineer (read:
mechanic), we had a mantra:

If it is too small, peen it. Too big, file it.

If it moves, salute it. If it doesn't move, paint it. If you can't paint it, put a fence around it. If you can't fence it in, put a guard on it.

Reams, when I want to know the actual ingredients of something, I look at the
MSDS. That must always be the truth, under penalty of law. For WD-40 it is
50% paint thinner and a small amount of light machine oil. The rest is
propellant and a very small amount of snake oil, so they can make their
miracle claims.

BTW, they are now SDSs, part of global harmonization.

But they do allow latitude in repoarting %s. I remember seeing one, with 5 ingredients, each was was listed as 5-95%. :)

Sure do have some fond memories of all my good chums down there from the CAF. Last time I saw Aubrey was at a crawfish boil in Vicksburg. Paul Fournette from LaFayette also!

Spent a lotta time with students on PA-18s out in Lubbock, TX. Did have to buy me a pair of cowboy boots (higher heels) for those heel brakes.

I’d never flown a PA-18 till this past January. I was need’n a flight review so friend told me ta git in his Super Cub and off we flew for an hour or so. Wouldn’t take any money. Said: now git on out ta Kalifornia and buy that J-3!
