White 33

Randy,
Looks like Bill Klares got another warbird in the air. White 33 was flown by Frank Royal in WW II and he was on had for it's first flight and public unveiling. He's now 101 years old. I remember the pieces of this airplane in Bill's hangar at Rialto years ago and we were all trying to figure out how some of the wing rivets got bucked since it was an early model and the entire leading edge of the wing was intercooler. It's kind of neat to see it in the air after looking at that pile of metal years ago. I guess they got Stev-o-rino to do the flight testing... ;-)

Another one gone west...

From Bill Klares: We are saddened to announce that Frank Royal passed away this morning. As you may know, Frank was the Commander of the 39th Fighter Squadron in New Guinea, to which the P-38 (White 33) that Westpac recently finished was assigned. He was delighted to see it fly in a ceremony held at the Museum on October 17, in his honor, and was even able to follow the P-38 in a chase plane on that day.

We wish Frank God Speed in his heavenly flight, and deepest condolences to his surviving family. He will be missed.

Damn. I sent him a copy of the dvd I made of an interview
with Kirby. I was interested to find out if he knew Kirby.
One of the guys at the museum is handling it. I got a cold reception from the shop.

Dick,
Get a hold of Bill Barclay aka "Bill Dude" at WestPac. He and I go way back. Tell him you know me and see if he can help you if the museum doesn't come through.

Dave

LirreM,
"I got a cold reception from the shop."

You ain't the only one. A few years ago we had the big Cirrus Owners and Pilots Association annual multi-day fly-in and symposium just down the ramp from them at KCOS. I got in touch with them to see if there was some way they'd like to maybe do a tour, or a talk or bring some of their birds over for our airport day. Nope, nada, don't bother us, we're important.

Ditto for the Pueblo Air Museum.

Guess some folks don't want a cluster of folks with a whole lotta disposable income looking at their stuff. If that happened, they might want to spend their money with 'em or something. Can't have that happening, can we? Guess they figured their fecal matter is odorless.

Best,
Andy

Think they did some resto work for Paul Allen, with strict NDA's in effect.

Correct. They've been doing Paul Allen's stuff for the Vulcan collection for years. When I was making some parts for them when they were at Rialto I had to sign a NDA to be in the shop. In general it's kind of off limits to the unwashed masses. <g>

Earlier today I was BS'n on the phone with Rick Broome out there and asked him if he could meb'be find out if Royal knew Marion F. Kiby? When I first got on Avsig Kirbs and Clay Tice were reminiscing about their "olde days" out in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Kirbs flew first the P-39s and then later was an ace in P-38s, seemed to me that he and Royal prolly were squadron-mates.
