Looks like the 'hog will be with us a few days longer.

I wonder if it will ultimately "out 'buff" the Buff for longevity.

unfortunately, the AF has halted the A-10 before it was even produced. The A-10 is an incredible airplane at what it does... and forces the AF to keep it.

Good news and -for me-, somewhat obvious. They all have new wing structures and some minor cockpit upgrades. No needed changes to that fast shooting gun and the engines seem sound and reliable.

Good news for Tucson and Davis-Monthan.

I seem to recall they were adapted from commercial aviation. Wikipedia says it's a militarized version of the CF34.

One would certainly hope! Toe-mas, you made me think back to flying at Transpo-72 at Dulles, remember BS'n with the guys next to us on the flight line, pilot and crew on it, was new back then.

The cockpit upgrades are more than minor. They went from steam gauges to glass cockpit.

Gun is fine.

Engines have some issues. They were not designed for that use. They were designed for the S-3 Viking (aka Hoover), and designed to run pretty steady power settings for long periods. In the A-10, you are jockeying the throttles a lot more, and that leads to some inspection and life limit issues. They did change the turbine wheels in the 80s that helped a lot.

And the A-10 could use a bit more thrust.

Yes.

And when they shut down production, they had the tooling and production drawing destroyed, to make sure it would not be resurrected. :(

The AF never has seemed to want to emphasize the CAS role. It's always played second fiddle or less.
Having the bit of cobra time I have, the A-10 was a great step up. The Army never could have supported it, or I would have been in line to have flown it.

Dave,

Terry may disagree, but the A-10 could never get in as close the folks on the ground as the "G" could with a "20". If I was at "fixed bayonets" I'm not sure I would not have preferred the "C" or "M". Just say'n.

And also the Key West Accord. The AF would never let the Army get the camel nose under the flap.

It was not that they did not emphasize it, it was that they would not admit that it takes a different airframe to do CAS properly.

Yes, but..
.
....The cost to reverse engineer things is minuscule compared to the pre-laser scanner and computerized data acquisition days. And, with such computerized data, the tooling isn't that big of a deal, but might be a bit more expensive if you don't let the Chinese do it...<g> There are some good shops in Mexico, however. In any event, duplication of the machined parts in the US wouldn't be that difficult or expensive, from a design standpoint.

Seems like the same "get lost" we are destroying everything about that aircraft which the USAF did to the Navy's P6M, when the AF won the "we're gonna carry the bomb" contest. Kinda of an institutional habit which reoccurs from time to time...

The Fighter Mafia were actually the folks responsible for the A10... and forcing it on the Air Force. John Boyd wasn't satisfied with the F-15.... he went on to push what became the F-16. During that time they pushed the A10 and killed the B-1 for the first time.

Well, back in Tucson now -and the local anti-noise people (non military) are also happy with the sorta quiet A-10 news. I don't know what the Az Air Guard -at the civil airport will do with their F-16's, but they also have a late version.

In any event, it's good to see the A-10's over Tucson. Got to the Base Exchange today (and class 6 store), and again noted that military pilots must be 19 years old, even as LT's.

Sigh -turn 80 this month.

Regards, Dux -wished I had made the last BP's, but too busy packing, etc.

No kidding. Went on a short carrier qual cruise on the Harry Truman a couple of years ago. We were in the CATCC watching the show and the tracking board, so we knew the pilot names. Saw a bunch if them in the officers mess the next morning and quickly concluded that the average new F18 pilot was a sophomore in high school or darn close to it.

Of course, last time I was up in DCA tower I got the same feeling. It's possible that I'm getting old, too...

You know you're getting old when your airline pilots and flight attendants look younger than your kids.

Terrance, gotta concur. Can recall once taxiing out at Seoul (Kimpo) with an early -100 whale. It had the lower powered -A engines IIRC. Cabin crew I had on that trip was made up of F/A's from the Seattle domicile (HIGH senority). Anyhow, looking at a short flight to Tokyo before going onwards to San Frisco so I told the PX over the PA system - "Folks, sometimes in this business you just don't feel too smart and I can't figure out how we're gonna be able to climb high enough to get on top of this anticipated turbulence but we'll try to give you a good ride". Lordy, I hadn't even taxiied past that old hangar going out towards the takeoff runway when I heard her footsteps climbing up the circular staircase, BAM-BAM-BAM! Tne cockpit door bursts open and in comes the lead F/A. She then hollers at me "YOU JUST TOLD THEM THAT I WASN'T VERY SMART!" She then made a few more comments/words directed towards all three of us and then left. I wuz still shakin' my head and thinking, "what'd I do?" when the F/O chuckles and sez to me - "Guess we're not gonna get any coffee or anything for the rest of this trip since you got one of those Seattle Widebodies all PO'ed at us".

Chuckle, memories!

best, randy

Bill, sometime get me to tell'ya about that time I had a SEATAC crew in back and on the Frankfurt overnight I ordered my usual "rhinescwhienhokken and behhh", German speakers here, help me out (ham hocks and beer). Takes a whole lotta typin' to 'splain what the #1 F/A did with my plate's leftover fat gristle.

Yes, I remember that place and we were staying at a Hilton on the river? That ham hock almost took 2 plates and likely had 3000 caleries just in the fat alone.

Meanwhile nice to see the A-10's flying over Tucson. Nice sunny weather here of course, but sounds like a nice late fall and warmer than normal Minneapolis weather as well.

Dux

Baseler Eck? Yum!

I think when I was in town I stayed in an Intercontinental or something like that on the river. Great place to run, along the banks, and in the golden light of late afternoon I heard all the church bells pealing. Good appetite for dinner after that.

Yup, try'n here to remember that place's name, favorite of the layover crews, long benches and community tables. "Crew room????" Dunno, sort'a a "mom and pop place, walking distance from the Hilton.

Anyhow, everytime I'd ordered that deal, I'd spend many minutes carefully trimming all the white colored fat and stuff off of the red meat, took a fair amount of time to get it done. Put all that stuff over off on the side off the plate to discard it and then finally "time to eat". Back on the farm they'd refer to that stuff as "cracklings".

Anyhow, the cabin crew was SEA-TAC based, IIRC the next day looking at their dates of hire on the DC-10's ACARS and they all exceeded any of ours. (18 May 60 here.) I distinctly remember the lead F/A looking at my plate and saying "Say, Captain, if you're not going to eat that, could I have it?" Sez I, "well, sure" and I watched her transfer those trimmings over to her plate. Out of the corner of my eye I saw my S/O sorta swallowing his saliva a few times, the F/O gagged and decided that he wasn't hunrgy and I was left with a severe case of head shakin'.

(This took a good amount of time to first type and then correct, never will forget flying with that Seattle crew.)

best, randy
