Alaska Proposes Buying Virgin America
      #423873 - 04/04/16 02:52 PM

LINK

"Alaska Air Group, the parent of Alaska Airlines, said on Monday that it had agreed to acquire Virgin America for $2.6 billion in cash.

The deal would unite two domestic carriers that are among the 10 largest in the United States, but that operate in a tier below the industry giants, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines and United Airlines. It would also expand Alaska Airlines’ presence in the lucrative California market, particularly in San Francisco and in Los Angeles, one of Alaska Airlines’ hubs."

Mase -

OK, Airbus fleet goes here, Boeing fleet goes there. Just how is that employee integration gonna work out?

Mainly, they establish a decent hub at SFO, and might make a dent in Southwest''s Oakland operations.

But, to their credit, they keep up the fight with Delta, or have created more reasons to cooperate, as Delta builds their Asia hub from Seattle.

Same way they are integrated any other airline with multiple fleet types.

Ground personnel are cross-trained.

The two unions (for each unionized employee group) meet to negotiate an integrated seniority list (ISL). They never agree so it proceeds to arbitration and then mediation. Eventually, an ISL is produced and it often includes some fences for some period of time. Each unionized group then negotiates a joint collective bargaining agreement (JCBA). When that's all done the work groups are merged operationally under the terms of the JCBA and ISL.

Everyone except the #1 guy on the seniority list thinks he got screwed (and sometimes he's unhappy about the result, too).

Pretty much nails it.

Except, management jobs aren't usually concerned with seniority and they will all have to interview and earn their job (again).

No different from Continental/United, Northwest/Delta or American/USAir.

or American/USAir.

Talked to a former TWAer now at AA this morning at our retired Duck's breakfast, sounded to me as though before they solve the USAir merger they'll first have to solve the America West one.

They've got to solve the TWA one first! Oh, by the way, I've got some Air Cal friends who aren't all that happy.

Yup, concur, the list goes on and on. I lived thru 3 of the things, Southern, then Air West and then Northwest, methinks it's great to be retired!

You sir are by no means alone, in either of those.

Forgetting about the seniority situation, some think that the lease situation at Virgin will give Alaska the opportunity to return to an all Boeing fleet if they want to do so....
