A New Scenery Mesh for FSX
      #421424 - 02/01/16 09:29 PM

NineTwo Productions has released a free terrain mesh for FSX. I'm using it now and it is a vast improvement over the stock FSX terrain mesh. The best part is the cost, Free. :-)

Terrain mesh is the elevation for the ground in the simulator. This is LOD 10 (37 meters) over most of the globe with a few exceptions. Every 37 meters is a lot of data points on the ground. :-)

Our Enhanced GPWS systems use such a database, though I don't know the resolution. They say that it was a byproduct of the cold war.

Sure it nice to have the terrain at or above you on your nav display when operating at night, or IMC, amongst the mountains in Central America!

This project uses LOD 10 (37m), but there is SRTM data at 1 arc second (30m/98feet).

I suspect that there is data that is much more accurate then this, but most likely classified way above my grade level and or need to know. :-))

Bill,

The site states that the US part is equal to the stock FSX LOD, is there some other improvement? I fly in the US only...

He is working on LOD 11 for the U.S. I'll let you know when it's released.

Thanks, Bill. Just got an email promoting MegaSceneryEarth for NJ at higher res, may take a peek at that. For $10.00 (50% off, 'cause I have the older version...or maybe for everyone on the mailing list <g>), why not <shrug>

Re: The updated MegaSceneryEarth NJ. Well, at least it was cheap(er) with the discount ;-) Way back they did a very good job with SoCal (for photo stuff), L.A. in particular, this, not so much. I suppose my settings may be an issue but other stuff looks great, Aerosoft's Manhattan X especially, oh well <shrug>

You are pretty much verifying what I had heard. Started to say something, guess I should have. Sorry 'bout that. :-))

I like Orbx and use FS High Altitude for the US.

Nah, all on me, hadda see it. Now I have ;-)

Did some looking, the Orbx stuff for NoCal looks interesting, and maybe the Pacific NW. OTOH, a review of their SoCal offering didn't look promising.

On another front, a company I somehow never heard of, Drzewiecki Design, had some things that looked interesting, especially a package of the NYC area airports, including KTEB. Downloaded the demo version, serious performance hit, and the demo is a low res version of the real deal. Nope. I have FSDreamTeam KJFK v2, looks great, less filling ;-)
