but if W7 works, why?

  • The free W7 to W10 upgrade is only for one year.
  • End of W7 is about 4 years out. Undoubtedly, that will signal software that will no longer work under W7.
  • If you're the "go to" person for any kind of IT function, be it family or for a paycheck, it would be wise to get W10 experience.
  • Indications are, that W10 has been compiled to be more secure.
  • It's there.
  • We're geeks. Do we need a reason? <g>

And in other news, the Raspberry Pi organization has announced a new model: The Pi Zero. Cost: $5. (SD card, cables, case, power supply sold separately.) <g>

In the multiple Windows 10 threads here, I still haven't seen the answer as to why move to W10. From 8.x, from what I've seen of it, sure, but if W7 works, why? Does W10 enable apps to run faster, make stuff run cooler than before, with no expensive software upgrades? Safer? Than what? ;-)

Agreed, Jim. I'm running 7 on a 5 year old desktop, a 4 year old notebook, and a 3 year old notebook. I see no need to do a 10 upgrade on these machines. Any improvements through 10 are marginal at best. When I buy new replacements I will likely go with 10 (and may not have a choice).

OK :-)...

Ain't nuttin' be free..

Four years is a lifetime, enough to learn Linux, even ;-) And if the software one has works, now, for you, uhmmm, unless it's that subscription or cloud based insanity, how is it going to stop working?

Blessedly free of support tasks, except the occasional Mac/iOS question or W7. Sussing out 'Droid stuff without oneathem phones has been entertaining though ;-)

Indications are that it's going to be warmer/colder/snowier/droughtier than normal, this winter <g>

OK, it's there, well, that's always worked for me, and geeky, OK too, but... I got old and stopped doing that. It caused pain. Lots of pain <g>

Does Pi charge for games? ;-)

Hi Scott,

Well I wined and stomped my feet when they took XP from me. Now I contemplate going straight from 7 to 10. My wife has 8 on her machine and I understand 10 isn’t too much different from 8?
I just know, that when I do cave in and go to 10, first thing I’ll wonder is: where’d all my stuff go?

Two reasons I’ve held off on the upgrade:
1) Wait for 10 to mature a bit more.
2) With 10 you have no control over when your computer downloads updates. Until just recently my internet connection was mostly via cell phone.

Regards,
Tom Charlton

Tom,

Apologies for jumping in, but given your valid questions and concerns, what's your reason to even consider it? Does Windows 10 offer you something you don't have now? If so, please explicate, sir!

Hi Jim,

1) 7 is going to go away soon.
2) 10 is a . . . ah . . . free upgrade for a limited time. (better get it while you can)
3) Benefits of 10 over 7? Well . . . it’s 3 more than 7, right? And, well, it’s just got’a be better, right?<g>

Regards,
Tom Charlton

From what I've heard, if you have 8, upgrade. 10 is a better version of 8. Or should I say, 10 is what 8 should have been.

Actually, Tom, it isn't going anywhere. Being bypassed in the time machine,
but it will still be here. I'm still running XP because TAPUBB runs on it.

Right now Win 7 serves me just fine and all the applications I need --
wordprocessor, spreadsheet, moneymanager, etc -- do what I need to have done.

Pretty much the same relation as 7 to Vista.

My son took the 10 upgrade and still grumbles about it.
