Microsoft is ramping up the pressure with popups demanding that I "upgrade" to Windows 10. The popup has two buttons: "Upgrade now" and "Upgrade later". Subtlety has never been their style...

Ralph, when I got that popup, there was also an X in the upper-right corner.
I click on it and the popup disappeared -- for the time being, anyway.

I just did the upgrade on my laptop. No problems. Looks a little different but haven't run into any negative effects as of yet.

That is the operative phrase: It comes back. You'll probably find it in your System Tray.

It can be removed by going to Windows Update and uninstalling update KB3035583.

Remember the games included with every version since Windows 95? If you
upgrade to the spyware version, they want monthly payment not to push ads
into the games.

Be aware of the lineage of your Windows license when you upgrade, especially if you want to get tricky.

I wanted to upgrade a Virtual Machine from 32-bit Windows 7 to 64-bit Windows 10. The way you do that is to upgrade from 32-bit Windows 7 to 32-bit Windows 10, then, after the machine is seen to be validated as GEN-U-WINE by Microsoft, you save the new license number, then do a clean installation of Windows 10 64-bit.

Phew.

I did all that. It worked fine for a few days, then it started to complain that the license key was blocked. A little digging indicated that the only way to -TRY- to correct the issue was to re-run the whole sequence back from a 32-bit Windows 7 installation.

I gave up. I don't need a Windows VM on that machine that badly.

You should take it. I've been using it for a month or so and am very happy with it. I've got it a laptop and desktop.

I upgraded from Windows 8.1, 64 bit on both machines. It was a great relief to get that system changed.

Geoff

Win 8.1. That was the original O/S on this machine.

In the multiple Windows 10 threads here, I still haven't seen the answer as to why move to W10. From 8.x, from what I've seen of it, sure, but if W7 works, why? Does W10 enable apps to run faster, make stuff run cooler than before, with no expensive software upgrades? Safer? Than what? ;-)
