Not likely. I'm not sure where they're at, but I'm seeing what looks like drone use for commercials on the beach, or a flyover on the TV newscast.

Totally un-related but I find it rather ironic that Congress sets deadlines for the FAA (or any other government agency). When's the last time they got a budget or anything else done on time?

Well, the AMA announced that they've exhausted all their options to avoid the registration deal and recommended going ahead and registering. I did so in time for today's deadline for free registration (actually, they charge your credit card and then refund it...how efficient).

After today, it's $5 one-time and you have to post your registration number somewhere on or in each UAS.

Not one time, every 3 years, IIRC.

Let's see how well the program's doing in 2019. Remember CB radio licenses...;-)

Yeap. Or a few arrests of young kids with Christmas presents. That will go over well.

Still trying to figure out how they can enforce a rule that has not finished going through the rule making process.

Sending scary sounding letters? That's probably good enough for most cases.

So we're more or less moved down to rural-ish North Carolina now, about to unload our house in Fairfax, VA, where we're 14.5 nm from DCA and I can't legally fly my $30 2-inch drone 50 feet above the driveway. I downloaded the FAA's spiffy new B4UFly app and fired it up here at the new scatter. Bang - a "must notify airport before flight" warning for Womble Farm, an R airport 4.6 nm away. Looked at it on Google Earth, no discernible runway, or at least nothing that doesn't look like the back half of it is corn.

I have a leg up on your average recreational drone pilot in that I actually know where to find the owner contact info (the app doesn't provide it, of course...) but it occurred to me that Mr. Womble might not appreciate getting pelted with legally mandated phone calls from every drone bozo with 5 miles.

Interesting side effects...
