SSD getting slow?
      #412374 - 07/22/15 03:32 PM

I've not used them myself, but my boss asked me to look into why his laptop was getting so slow. And he's right - it was ridiculously slow. CPU fine, paging fine, Disk I/O seemed fine. No errors. But still way slow.

So I went hunting on the Crucial website and discovered that (at least some) SSDs need to do periodic "garbage collects". Hopefully this happens in the background, but if not, the SSD needs some "alone time" while powered up. I tried having him leave his machine on the BIOS screen overnight, and he said that fixed it.

My SSD used to be so much faster... What happened?

In this case it was a Crucial, an older one (C800 2.5). But the whole idea that SSDs needed maintenance to maintain performance was completely new to me.

Reads a lot like a solid state version of disk fragmentation, and for the
same reasons, I'll bet.

Very interesting. That is new to me too. I was aware of TRIM, and the pro's and con's, but hadn't heard of an OS independent Garbage Collection process.

Eh, kinda I guess.

The details

Now I understand why things got so slow.

Mac folks, no fear. There's a update that allows you to run TRIM. Latest OS X update allows you to enable TRIM for third-party SSDs
