For those of us of a certain age that was heart-rending. Thank you...I guess.

Patty, I think not, but I dunno. Anyhow, thanks much! Made me reminisce when looking at some of those videos/photos. I used to wander out the backdoor of the Manila Hotel when overnighting there, thru the tennis courts and the backyard over to the water's edge. There was a bronze plaque installed there on the shoreline, said "In commemoration of the PAA China Clipper that used to moor at this location". Made me recall also while looking at your video of the China Clipper that the C.C. didn't go all the way to China, they used a Sikorsky to fly that last leg of the trans-pacific flight to Hong-Kong's harbor.

My boss in the airline's flight training department used to have a nickname for everyone and everything, Pete always called them "Pandemonium World Airways". Their logo usually also had an advertising trailer after the logo that said - Pan American Airways, The World's Most Experienced Airline. One morning when I came to work, he'd been reading the morning's newspaper and, as he put down the paper, Pete says "Well, I read that the world's experienced airline just had another experience last night".

best, randy

One of those old-timey movie moments that's always stuck with me was a bit of recurring dialogue in the 1936 film
China Clipper
. Bogart and the Alameda radio op would call each other, back and forth, in an oddly rhythmic chant:

"AL-a-ME-da CALL-ing CHI-na CLIP-per!"

"CHI-na CLIP-per CALL-ing AL-a-ME-da!"

The radio op was Milburn Stone, Doc on "Gunsmoke" years later.

Yup, have watched it before, Humphey Bogart and Milburn Stone, black and white (obviously). Thought of it many times out there over the Pacific when using the HF.

Yup, concur, looks'ta me like they did! Anyways, you gonna migrate back up north to Cook anytime soon?

One more about my old boss in the Flight Training Dept. Pete told me one day that "Alfalfa Bill" Studer (farmed out south near Lakeville) was due for a checkride. A week or so later Pete sez to me "you get Soybean Bill done last week?" I looked at Pete and replied "Pete, first you called Bill 'Alfalfa Bill' and now it's 'Soybean' Bill, which is it?" Pete sez "Depends upon the season, Randy!"

Patty,

While I can only look back at the "Golden Age" of aviation from the eyes of a child, I really did enjoy this documentary.

It did bring back the experiences of a young teen flying on airliners for the first times, when it was a Big Deal to be flying somewhere.

Thank you for posting this.

See Ya' this summer (if not before).
