ALL: I spoke for the ABS last Saturday in Savannah, GA. This was my third time speaking for them, and each time they have been a wonderful audience and an impressive group.

When we were flying over Georgia enroute to Cocoa Beach last Friday evening, we heard some people heading towards Savannah mention the convention. We stopped for fuel in the tiny airport at Elberton, Georgia - 27A.

Used to go into Elberton a bunch 20 years ago, Is that Luscombe still on the ramp with flat tires?

Jeff H--

<<Same group you had last week at the Doctor's convention?>>

Funny!
Actually, those who attend these conventions--regardless of their means of livelihood--tend to be very dedicated pilots who know there aircraft well. I have been impressed with them over the years.

John O--

What a small world. My family lived in Elberton when I was born, although I was actually born in a hospital across the state line in South Carolina. Did the Elberton airport have a sign up bragging about my one-time residence there? <BG>

Small world indeed!

The runway had recently been lengthened to 5004 feet. Interestingly, it curls up at each end, sort of like a piece of wet paper that has dried. Coming in from the north, after a 4 hour leg, it was not easy to find that east/west runway -- even with GPS!

The airport was pretty sleepy. The 100LL pump looked like a typical gas station pump of 25 years ago. They did build a new Pilot Lounge building that was quite nice (and air conditioned!). There was a local fellow wrenching on a C182 while we were there. He seemed quite taken with our Centurion. He said he had one back in the 80's. He said we were perhaps the second arrival that day. I'm afraid I did not see your plaque at the airport, but perhaps that is because they decided to hand out 8x10 glossies, which, unfortunately, were gone by the time I got there. :)

It was my first landing in Georgia.

John

Great group. I'm a life member. Know a lot of folks in that chapter. Sorry to reply late, just got back in town.

Best,

Dave

John,

We had the Raisbeck mods added to our B200 so that we could meet runway requirements back then, good they lengthened it.

>>> it was not easy to find that east/west runway <<<

They only had an NDB approach back then, I think, and the way the trees are on the north side, plus the elevation on the north...made a circle difficult.
