My Stratus 1 for sale on eBay
      #369036 - 05/16/13 03:35 AM

As I've upgraded to a Stratus 2, I'm selling my Stratus 1 on eBay.

Did you ever see the traffic with that one? I have been using one and I think I may have not downloaded all I need, because i haven't seen any traffic yet.

John - I'm thinking of upgrading, too. I really like idea of having an AHRS backup. I'm encouraged to see the bids you're getting.

Oh boy. Simple question - long answer ahead:

After upgrading the firmware on the Stratus 1, I -did- see -some- traffic, based on the limitations of a 978 MHz UAT ADS-B In device in an aircraft that is not configured to tell ground stations that you have ADS-B In capabilities on 978 MHz.

Basically, if you have ADS-B Out, configured to say you have ADS-B In on 978 MHz you -should- now see ALL available traffic including that re-broadcast from the ground.

I've just had the final piece of the puzzle put in place for me today.

In our case, while we have ADS-B Out in two of our aircraft thanks to the Garmin GTX-330ES, the older software (older than last week!) could not be configured to request ADS-B In to be sent to your aircraft on 978 MHz. As of software version 7.0.2 for the 330ES, released just last week, that option can now be configured.

Without that option, you will only see traffic when someone around you with ADS-B Out request ADS-B In to be broadcast on 978 MHz.

John

John,

I did the firmware update on a hotel wifi, and it never seemed to "finish", but I couldn't get it to recognize the unit again, as if, we have already done that....

Near CLT I feel certain there are enough ads b out airplanes, that it would, should trigger the station to send. Btwthdik..

Jeff -- Not sure about the ADS-B equipped aircraft...I had none (as in zero) aircraft shown on the Stratus 1/FF from Delaware Bay until landing at HPN on Sunday. I did see a few over Delmarva (although they were 11-14,000' below me, not very much of a threat).

So, I'm on my way to SFB Sanford, fl.....as I approach the Daytona area, there are a zillion airplanes on my IPad...I think every Embry Riddle plane has ADS B.

I had to really zoom in to see the chart, and not a blob of blue arrows.

It works!

Jeff -- But without ADS-B UAT out, you'll never know if it's *all* the airplanes..... <G>

As I wrote that I was thinking, at least one has ADS B out...but then I figured Riddle got some sort of a test contract..

It was like a swarm of bees.

I didn't play with it too much, but it seems like the size of the target doesn't change with the scale, so they look really large when scaled out, but perfect when zoomed in.

It surprised me that the N number was shown on some. Are these the "out" airplanes?

That is my understanding. Two of our six aircraft have ADS-B out via the Garmin GTX-330ES transponder. Those two will display their N-number to me when I'm using my Stratus 2 (for ADS-B IN) in our other aircraft (or on the ground, or what have you.)
