FAA has announced that the tower closings are delayed until June 15. CNN and other sources may have more later.

http://www.faa.gov/news/press_releases/n...amp;cid=102_P_R is the FAA press release.

(I believe you could read this to say, "We need more time to get them to convert to NFCT's so we never have to fund them again.")

Would have been much quicker to read too.

I also just heard 50 local authorities were planning to operate their towers
themselves and these extra weeks would give the FAA time to make an orderly
transfer.

An interesting experience at HKY. Clouds were 9OVC, but benign so I could log some currency cloud flying. Did the RNAV 6 into HKY. I was #2 for the approach and would be holding at ZOMAR. That was good, I needed to log a hold also. Then I heard ATL center tell someone they'd be #3 behind me. One turn around the track and I was cleared for the approach. I planned to taxi back for immediate return to Hendersonville. A Cirrus was waiting, so I'd be #2 for departure when I got my clearance. We both had to wait for #3, a jet, to land. I imagined all this taking place without the tower. ATL has a transmitter on the ground at HKY, but they'd be a good bit busier giving clearances and reminding everyone to "cancel on the ground with me or FSS".

And now, a DOT Press Release says that the contract towers will remain open for the rest of FY2013:

Quote:

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood announced today that DOT has determined that the recently enacted Reducing Flight Delays Act of 2013 will allow the FAA to transfer sufficient funds to end employee furloughs and keep the 149 low activity contract towers originally slated for closure in June open for the remainder of fiscal year 2013. The FAA will also put $10 million towards reducing cuts and delays in core NextGen programs and will allocate approximately $11 million to partially restore the support of infrastructure in the national airspace system.
