More B738 HUD
      #365236 - 03/19/13 03:38 PM

As I gain proficiency with the HUD flying manually, I have soon realized it is all about keep'n the little thingy in the big thingy. :)

HUDs are great things that even make my approaches better.

That HUD view demonstrates a problem I can never solve: all the blank space at the top makes me feel like adjusting my seat up a notch to center up the image--but as you configure and the nose points down, seems like your seat's too high.

I haven't figured out the right adjustment yet.

The other thing about the HUD adjustment is the intensity setting: if you use auto, it's so sensitive at night that as you get below 10K and ground lighting starts to vary, the intensity blossoms then fades as you move forward--very annoying!

But if you don't leave the intensity in auto, take off in daylight but approach in dusk or darkness, when you flip down the combiner you'll get a green flash that'll just about blind you.

So I try to remember when stowing the HUD after takeoff to select a dim auto setting for landing, then in the dark I adjust it manually to avoid the blossom fluctuations in the dark on approach.

We have 2 versions of the HUD on our jets and the newest one has a kind of annoying constraint: you can't select AIII until below 3,000 feet. On approach, it's not the time when I want to be selecting HUD modes 3 pages into the FMS.

That said--the HUD is awesome. Here's a detailed report I wrote on it:
