New Piper owner

Since no one has posted here for a year and a half, I thought I would mention that I am now the owner of a Pa-28-140 with the 160hp conversion.

I sold the Bonanza last fall to pay off some debt, but it did not cure me of the ownership disease, so in January I bought the little Cherokee for something to play with on my days off.

It has 3,000 total time and just 500 on the engine, so should provide me with lots of use at a much lower cost of operation than my V35. And at my age, I am not in a hurry to get anywhere.

I had one of those with the original engine eons ago, on a leaseback deal that went south when the lessee folded. It made its way through several owners, eventually winding up in New Mexico in the hands of someone who missed class on density altitude day...four fatal.

even with 160 hp I don't think I would ever use the back seats, except on the hangar floor for guests.

AT our air park some years ago one of the owners tried to take off with 4 in the thing. Fortunately a utility pole and pond stopped them before enough altitude to kill them.

I have no need for four seats. With full fuel and my wife's and my weight up front, we still have a nice margin for luggage if we want to take a trip. And unless we are going cross country there is no need for full fuel in these airplanes.

It burns about eight gallons an hour and holds 50 gallons max. Fill it to the tabs for 38 gallons, which is more than enough for most flights.

Fortunately there are nifty apps for weight and balance that make it easy and take away any excuse for doing one before flight.

Nice to see you have a plane again. I took some fun trips in a flying club Cherokee years ago (g). Fond memories.

Best,

I am not sure if you are refering to the Bonanza that I owned for 17 years, but it had five seats installed when I bought it, and I did do one flight with all five seats occupied by adults.

Later, I removed the fifth seat and reduced the insurance expense.

I don't expect I will ever have four adults in my little bitty Piper. And that is just fine.

Sounds perfect. Although I have flown many hours alone, there was always room for someone else.

Thanks, Joe. I have quite a bit of time in them, back from when I first got out of the Air Force and was a renter. I also have three students who fly Cherokees like mine - one of them much nicer, the others older models.

Actually, the first plane I got checked out in as a civilian was a PA-28-140 back in 1973. But I quickly moved up until I was renting Arrows more often than any other model.

Well, yeah. Gotta have something to play with. Plane ownership is a club that I like belonging to. I have discovered a way to lower the dues, but I still want to belong.

Gil B--

Congrats on the "new" airplane. I'm becoming more and more convinced that recreational flying is the way to go. Seems to me it's a lot more fun--and a lot less money--than flying around on a schedule, even if it's your own schedule.

I've many a happy hour in a PA-28. I was with a Piper distributor at the time I got my instrument ticket, working with dealers and flight schools. I flew Cherokees most of the time, and filed IFR at altitudes which I knew would put me in the clouds. That was a bumpy summer, but I built a lot of confidence.

And, ain't that low fuel flow flow nice? Who knows--maybe you'll move "up" to a Cub someday!

Thanks, Ralph. I did consider a Cub, but my wife thinks we still might do some trips over to Michigan or Minnesota, and she and I agree that we need to have room for a few bags.

I am OK with flying slow and cheap. I do have access to some other airplanes and get to fly with owners in high(er) performance now and then. It no longer matters much to me.

At my age, it is just nice to be able to keep on flying.

Gil B:

Yes, and the PA-28 140 (now 160) will take you wherever you wanta go--as long as you like flying. I haven't flown the 160 hp version except one time and that was in the 1970s. IIRC, the extra 20 hp added a lot of performance. I'm kinda jealous.

Performance is all relative, of course. I flew it from Wausau to Marshalltown, Iowa two weeks ago. And back.

About five hours altogether, (all hand flown without an autopilot) lots of trim adjustments, low level due to clouds (I am not current IFR).

Very enjoyable. And my client paid for the fuel.

Yes. We had something similar on the Bonanza a few years back.

We need a simple one that we can post as a placard right in front of the pilot: "DON'T DO NOTHIN' STUPID!"

Since no one has posted here for a year and a half,
I haven't been on this forum for a long time. Flying from Cognac Military Base in France I am busy with matters closer to me. My real question is... where are all the Piper owners and flyers then talking to each other? I had a one year sub on Pipers Forum but didn't find that much of interest.
There must be questions etc specially for the older Pipers, I fly 505 IFR a 1978 Turbo Arrow 4 with a G430 and an Aspen in it. Of course I do need help from other owner once a while but I have cooped so far with European Forums. Years ago this forum was the safe heaven for small US mnfg airplanes, what happened??
