TSA Inspector
      #324085 - 08/30/11 12:55 AM

I just heard on another forum from one of our pilots about an encounter he had with a "TSA Inspector":

Quote:

A TSA inspector came up on our plane and showed her very important "badge" at [KXYZ]. Little airport for those of you that haven't been there yet. She was trying to ask me oral type questions.

What kind of curtain is in front of the cabin door?

Does the company issue us any items that are prohibited by TSA?

What do I do with a jumpseater when he boards the aircraft?

I was like WTF? Does she even have any authority to ask me this stuff? Lucky for her I wasn't pissed off and it was our last leg home. She said she'd be back tomorrow to get the next crew..I think I could of told her to F off, and I don't have to answer anything unless she was FAA. What do you guys think? Never seen anything like that before.

Now, an FAA inspector can certainly ask those kinds of questions, but now we have to deal with the TSA as well? Since when did they get the authority to interrogate flight crews like this?

Jim: What continues to bother me about TSA (and customs when inland) is the lack of clarity of what rights we do have. I have to say, I would be reasonably cooperative, but at some point would seek the advise of my attorney simply because I don't know what I can and cannot do and have it used against me if there is an issue, and with all they are doing, I don't know what would be an issue.

When they asked if I was carrying any items prohibited by TSA, I would beg off because I don't know everything that might be prohibited by TSA and wouldn't know why that might apply to me.

Best,

Dave

I would have been tempted to point to the crash axe!

Well, if that happened to me I would certainly make a written report to my Chief Pilot for starters.

Like some else mentioned, point to the crash ax.

I assume you are allowed to fly without your crash ax? Otherwise you could be in the middle of a showdown.

Pretty sure that Ax is part of the MEL as required equipment? Same as the fire extinguishers and first aid kits.

Can't tell you how many flights were almost cancelled because some F/A reported a first aid kit with a broken seal. Fortunately we had fresh ones in stock, even at the out stations. We also had a supply of new seals <G>. Not to say someone unnamed would reseal a kit missing one band-aid....

He's not allowed to fly without it.

Nope, MEL item.

>BUT< the TSA inspector could count another potential hijacking as having been averted (since the flight never got off the ground.)

The crash axe is listed in our MEL, item 25-32. It has the notation "ALWAYS REQUIRED". It would be interesting to see the reaction of a TSA Inspector to seeing the crash axe on the flight deck.
