Of course it's hard to determine what the truth is. Is Air Trek a competent responsible operation that is being harassed by the FAA, or is it a hazardous operation that was long overdue for revocation (or something in between)?
The fact that Air Trek was in business for over thirty years without serious regulatory problems doesn't mean that they were running a safe operation in 2008. What could have happened? Well, Air Trek might have run a great operation for nearly all of that time and then gone bad after a management change or extreme cost cutting. Or it may have been a bad operation for a long time with a negligent FAA failing to take necessary action to correct it.
I don't really know anything about aviation, but I know plenty about regulation and the operation of government bureaucracies. Once in a while, those bureaucracies are right. Geoff Sjostrom
Actually that's not in dispute. What's up for question is how this guy considers himself (or how anyone else considers him) qualified to even make a determination of whether or not AirTrek is competent. He's not a qualified ops or maintenance inspector he hasn't even read the rules for determining their status and yet he's ready to issue an Emergency Revocation.
Equivalent to me issuing and executing a death penalty for no discernible reason.

>>I daresay my qualifications to be an airworthiness inspector exceed those of >>the guy being deposed.
I didn't watch much of the video, but I'll defer to you on the guy's lack of qualifications.
On the other hand, even stupid officers make good arrests once in a while, and the fact that this investigator lacks qualifications that some here would like to see him have doesn't mean that there aren't real problems at Air Trek.

Geoff, FWIW the NTSB reversed the FAA's revocation of Air Trek's charter certificate, and ordered the FAA to pay $124,527 of Air Trek's attorney fees.
To the thread, the inspector in the videos said he is an "airworthiness-avionics" inspector. The FAA's jobs site indicates avionics inspectors are not required to hold an A&P, a pilot cert, repairman cert, etc. He was likely qualified for his position. job description

There is a difference between meeting the stated qualifications and being qualified for the job.

<grin> "Being qualified for the job" as defined by us? Or by the FAA? And yes, it's ironic that the FAA hires people it thinks are "qualified for the job", though they aren't qualified to work for the companies they regulate.

Let's be sure to remember this before we get all enthusiastic about government regulation of the financial markets.

I couldn't verify this; it was in a market letter I receive.

“Here’s your federal government at work. Listen to this. The FAA has ordered a helicopter pilot who runs his own one pilot charter company… now remember, he’s the whole company!!... One Pilot. Just him. They’ve ordered him to give himself random, surprise drug tests! He has to surprise himself with the drug test. The only way you can do this is if you’re on drugs, wouldn’t you say?”
