Folks,

Look at this British 1931 Stupid Simple, Dirt Cheap, Night Landing Aid -- article right side. All you need is some string, and ....

Kcid LlirreM--

By golly, you're right! From "Fate is the Hunter." He used the trailing radio antenna to get into Greenland, IIRC. I hadn't thought of that 'til I read your posting...

Not sure I'd call this scheme stupid or useful. You know weight on a string will vary it's distance from the airplane dependent on airspeed and altitude. Entering ground effect will change the trail angle. When we wanted to fly low over water we lowered the tail hook to get some advanced too low warning. I think this was more a confidence maneuver than anything else. A dependable radar altimeter was much more better. Very challenging to fly low (below 300ft was low) over water at night with no horizon. I recall a P2V out of Barbers losing a left wing tip tank doing this back in the 60s. Maybe it was Dux? White caps helped. Clear night with flat sea surface reflecting stars was an extra challenge. You had to be young and immortal to do this. Some might say, stupid.

Jack,

Is this the same string that one ties to the prop to pull-start the engine?
