Three of my Sprint-using friends have and like the HTC Evo. Main issue is shorter battery life than an iPhone 3GS.

MAIN issue is the small footprint of the Sprint network... ;-)

+1. I used to have Sprint. I noticed that whenever I "went places" it would end up roaming - and it was always roaming on Verizon. Guess who my phone is with now? <g>

Regards,
Joe

Roaming on the Verizon network is free provided you don't do it more than x (which I think is 25%) of the the time. Since I don't travel a lot that means for me the coverage map is the union of Sprint and Verizon.

More importantly for me is that Sprint is one of the few carriers that still supports unlimited data and has phones that can be easily (and for free) tether to run your laptop, iPad, and other device.

Do you know how what sort of battery life they are seeing?

I imagine running that big display and 4G data has to use a lot of power.

If you don't travel Sprint could be OK but make sure you know what they are promising (and what they're not):

Off-network Roaming: ... Sprint reserves the right, without notice, to deny, terminate, modify, disconnect or suspend service if off-network usage in a month exceeds: (1) voice: 800 min. or a majority of minutes; or (2) data: 300 megabytes or a majority of kilobytes...

...Music store, Location Based Services (GPS), Ready Link, and Data Link [note: e.g. tethering] may not be available in roaming areas...

OK, I use my StreetPilot more than my Nuvi. I forget that the Nuvi has an internal battery.

Strange.

Jerry, I have the EVO and love it. I noticed the short battery life when it was new and I was exploring the features a lot. Now it easily makes it through the day with normal use. I have a car charger to give it some juice if I am driving, but I do use it at work constantly, including internet and various applications such as taking notes and looking up tail numbers to record the owner's name for service at the FBO. No problems.

That said, I don't get 4G service where I live, only when I travel to a larger city.

No complaints about roaming or lack of service anywhere.

I've been running my new (1750mAh vs 1350mAh) battery for a few days now and the battery life is significantly improved.

I waited two years longer than I should have to move from Verizon to Sprint, worried about the coverage.

Like Jerry, I realized (at least as of 2007 or so) roaming was free on Verizon, with the restrictions you noted. None of those were issues for me, and comment about services available, or not available were really the same as if you were in a weak Verizon coverage area -- ie, standing next to someone getting EVDO coverage on a Verizon phone, I got EVDO coverage on my Sprint device.

I found that I rarely roamed to Verizon, given how little I traveled, but it was a nice safety net to have, and, for me, Sprint was less than half of what I was paying Verizon at the time. Now the deals are not so hot, but I would still see savings over Verizon for my type of usage.

Also - the coverage map linked below seems to cover more territory.
