Bought a Baron
      #278208 - 01/13/10 10:17 PM

I know this section doesn't get much play, so I thought I'd throw this in.

This week I bought a 1975 E55 Baron. Sold the TN Bonanza last month.

I haven't seen the Baron, but I'll fly to northern Virginia in a week to get it. Nice plane. It has the IO-550 engines, 530W, 430W, 55X autopilot, Sandel, backup HSI (!), two transponders, Aviation Design leather interior, etc.

It's in for the annual right now.

Photo and specs are at www.djets.com. The previous owner put that site up.

I got the Bonanza so we could shoot video from it for the TV series. Wow, was that really five years ago? Time to get back into the twin.

Tom:
Wow, can't believe you went with the Baron, but OTOH, I do understand it. Who was the lucky SOB who bought one of world's finest 36's? <G> So all our whining and moaning about much owning a twin costs (silence there, Siciliano!) didn't deter you, eh?

Congrats on the buy. If $$ didn't cost so much, well, money, I might have hung on to the Seneca III. (Of course my soul is now owned by Sovereign Bank for the Cirrus...)

Best regards,
Andy

Nice. Dang, you had that A36 a long time. Even did some annuals on it, huh?

OK, so what's next after the Baron? <vbg>

Combining some answers here . . .

A fellow on Beechtalk bought the A36. (www.beechtalk.com)

The interesting part is that the market for Barons is so depressed that I paid exactly the same for the Baron as I got for the Bonanza. The Baron has much better avionics and interior.

I had the Bonanza five years. Certainly a record for me!

But, I had a Baron and the Twin Bonanza before I went back to the Bonanza. I don't have the need for the video shoot now, and I just like the idea of that second engine when I'm over the piney woods, rocks, or flying for two hours over 100-foot ceilings.

I just found an article by Pete Bedell about putting the IO-550 engines into his D55 Baron. I would expect the same kind of performance increase.

I sure am looking forward to seeing it!

Good time to buy, if you can sell what you have....like houses today. With a buyer in hand....such a deal.

If I were gonna buy a twin, it may very well be this one.
The E is an awesome machine, and this one looks sweet!
Good luck with it.

Nice to hear Tom. I know you've been noodling it for some time. Lookin forward to a ride; I've never been in an E Baron. You seem to seemlessly transition between singles and twins--good on ya.

Dave, thanks so much for you help. I loved getting to fly your P-Baron -- great plane. I just couldn't make myself pull the trigger on the 58P, and this well-equipped E55 with the IO-550s popped up on Beechtalk, so I jumped on it.

Now I have to look for the right manufacturer and installer to put air conditioning in it. Yeah, I know. A P-Baron comes with A/C.

I'll bring it over to ADS for you to fly sometime.

Looked at this again Tom and am reminded of what a nice bird that appears to be. You shouldn't have any problem cruising in the mid teens in this bird when the situation warrants with a nice lite machine that trues out as fast as the P-Baron lower on lower fuel flow.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dave

What a beautiful Baron!

I'm getting homesick for my 195 - it's been in upstate NY since October, being reskinned. Was tied down at Stillwater, OK when an ugly hailstorm came through and peppered a load of skins.

I've been thinking the same thing... the prices of Barons are way down. I will probably gravitate to a stretch Baron. Not sure though.

Here's an article on the A/C:

The Aircenter, Inc. Cool-Air™ system is an electrically
powered, environmentally safe R-134a air conditioning system
approved by STC for installation in the B55, C55, D55,
E55, 58 and 58TC Barons. The powerful
16,500 BTU system (as compared to 14,000
BTUs in factory air conditioning) uses the
same lightweight components that are standard
in the Cessna CJ-series jets—totaling 64
pounds, mounted aft of the rear baggage area.
A prototype that I examined about three
years ago was originally placed in the nose
baggage compartment, but Aircenter wisely
determined pilots did not want to give up nearly
one-third of the nose baggage capacity.
Two evaporator motors propel 400 cubic
feet per minute of cool air flow. That’s a ton
and a half of cold air—

************

Congrats on a beautiful plane.

Tony Williams

Well, I'm building the squawk list that comes with each airplane purchase. Nothing big. Just "stuff."

Having fun. Flew it to Phoenix from Louisiana last Friday. Tried to get home on Monday. A wall of weather just east of Dallas got my attention. Heavy rain. Lightning running from the Gulf to Little Rock. SLD warnings at 8,000 feet.

Uhhhhh . . . no thank you. Made an ILS approach to a 500-foot ceiling at Addison and spent the night. Flew back in the sunshine on Tuesday.

Way too much fun.

I've said it elsewhere, folks can do a lot worse than follow Tom around and
buy his airplanes. He always gets them checked out by people who know what
they're doing and fixes them up some himself.

Somebody's gonna get a good Baron.

Chatted with Tom today and he's rethinking the Baron because he's moved closer to where commercial service will be more convenient. In the past, he would have had to connect a couple times to get to his destination. GA made more sense.

Now, he's moving to Metairie and service in New Orleans will be much easier. He's also trying to figure out where GA will fit in his future. He's sure it will, but not sure how.

Sounded in good health and said business was very good.

Best,

Dave

I just realized, after looking at the pictures, that this plane was from Camarillo, California... my old stomping grounds.

You can see the Commemorative Air Force hangars in the background, and the B-25 parked nearby.

Sold the Baron.

Currently without plane. We are moving next month to South Louisiana (about a 4-hour drive from here). After we get everything moved and settled in, I'll begin looking for a good A36.

Y'all been goin' through planes a mite quick lately, haven't you? Get tired of "twice the motors, thrice the costs?" <BG> Agree on the A36; there are moments when I look back to about this time in 2005 and I wonder, for moment, "what if I'd actually listened to Tom and George?" Oh well, can't change the past.

As Tom alluded to, I wound up buying a brand-new 2006 Cirrus. An airplane I love unconditionally 29 out of 30 days a month. The day I write the loan check? Uh, maybe not so much. <BG>

But I have two incredible mechanics and let's say I know where parts are. (Well, I used to, Cirrus sold their parts inventory to a distributor to stay afloat)

Walter moved to Vail, CO.

We are moving to the North Shore (of Lake Pontchartrain) to be closer to our son, daughter-in-law, and new grand daughter.

Packing is a stone cold b***h.

Yeah, I've gotten over the twin flu after having three of them.

Sure do miss the plane, though. Had to go to Grand Island, NE, a few weeks ago. 12 hours door-to-door on the airlines. Four hours flight time in the Bonanza. Ugh.
