The Form You Submitted is no Longer Valid
      #261594 - 08/24/09 09:33 PM

If I spend too much time working on a post, what I've written disappears when I click on "Continue," and I get the message in this thread title.

I don't see the need for a timeout feature, but if there is such a need, it would be nice if there were some warning so I could save my work first.

Richard,

I've had it happen to me as well, but some times not a timeout. Sometimes it
just hangs (AOPA used to be bad about that).

If I've typed more than a few lines I sometimes type CtrlA to "select all"
in the edit window then Ctrl Insert to copy it to the clipboard. Then, if it
crashes, I can copy it to Notebook or Word and try to get back online.

There is a need to have a timeout since in a web environment it really can't
"see" your machine and application. I'm not sure what the right delay is.

Dan

I think that's the gist of it. To the server, you've stopped talking. For all it knows, you closed the browser, turned off the computer and crawled into bed.

The easiest fix - if you're on your own computer, simply set the login to "remember me". That way when you suddenly pop up again after the time out, it can login you back in and you can pick up as if nothing happened.

This was a situation where I was more or less continuously typing in the message window. Maybe that's not sent out from my computer until I click on "Continue," I don't know. I haven't had this problem on other message boards, and some of my replies have taken a pretty long time to compose. I've had the problem repeatedly on this board. I used to copy my typing to the clipboard on a frequent basis, but I don't often post here anymore, so I forget to do it. In any case, it really shouldn't be necessary.

When banking Web sites time out they often use a pop-up to warn me first.

I always use that feature, and the problem occurred anyway. In any case, I don't think it's a password issue, because after this happens I'm still able to access the subscriber-only sections without reentering it.

You're right - it's not an issue of whether you're logged in or not. I've gotten bit on that, too - when I think it has been a long time banging on the same message and a timeout is possible, I highlight and copy the whole message right before sending it. Then if it blows up, I've already got it and can just paste it into a new message.

Correct. The server sees none of that. One way to avoid it is to "continue" so you can preview the draft and then keep plinking away at the message.

Richard,

You're on to another workaround. Click something which causes a response,
e.g. "url" (you can cancel the dialog) every so often.

The difficult thing is remembering that I need to use a workaround. It will probably be a long time before I write another long post here, by which time I will probably have forgotten about it again, because none of the other boards I post on have this problem.

The only web page I know which does NOT time out has some javascript which
checks every few minutes to see if what you're typing has changed since the
last check.

I don't know how they're doing it, but I have never had the problem on the AOPA Web site, in spite of taking a very long time to compose some posts. I never had the problem on Silicon Investor either.
