Hang on to your hat! On second thought, maybe you shouldn't let go...

Joe, I'm swaging that it's a 1/3 scale model - does that look just about right to you?

Looks about right. The Extra-300 is about 22.5 feet long, so when you compare it to the human scale conveniently provided in the video that ratio fits quite well.

That trip down the runway on the creeper must've been a gas!

Joe

Yes, there are lots of really big RC models around now, thanks to the founder of the Circus Circus in Vegas. He bankrolled a contest for them called the Tournament of Champions that had some $100,000 in prize money...it lost tons of money and died with him a few years ago, but it created a model style that remained popular.

Anyone know at what size/weight it stops being an RC model and becomes a UAV in the eyes of the Feds?

I'm not sure that that 1/3 scale Extra would qualify as a Part 103 ultralight either by weight or speed even if the pilot flew inside as opposed to standing on the runway.

(I STILL like the idea of a 1/3 scale Fifi - 50' <mo-less> span and all)

Whew, that's a great question. I don't even see a distinction in the FARs between manned and unmanned aircraft (except for balloons and rockets) let alone a distinction between models and UAV's. I'll bet there's some interesting case law kicking around.

Heehee, that would be great.

And they are getting into the 1/2 scale range. You read in magazines and online about people who crawl into their RC model fuselage to work on it.

WRT the TOC, one of the guys who won in back then was in my Lead in Fighter class at Hollomon. He writes for a couple of magazines now and flies for Delta. When I knew him he was on his way to flying F-15s.

IIRC the TOC started as a big pattern competition, then evolved into the giant scale stuff. But still some big tournements for them. 3D stuff, hovinrg, high alpha stuff and all, pretty amazing flying.

And LOTS of money in them (spent not earned :) ).
