So, how would a homeowner benefit from such a device?

It keeps you from having to squint thought the front door peephole to see who's there. Since it records video and is motion activated, you can check and see who's been at the door in your absence.

Russ,

Dunno. I think if I were a burglar and had come through that door, I'd tear
the thing off the door and take it with me.

<< So, how would a homeowner benefit from such a device? >>

Didn't you read the ad? It's a "lifestyle product". That means it makes you feel better about yourself.

Regards,
Joe

You can say that about a lot of things including burger alarms. I've seen it before. When installing an alarm, make sure the alarm itself is protected! <g>

Home security covers a lot of territory. I don't know if burgers case the joint in the days before the buggery or not. If they do, then by reviewing the video, you'd be on alert. The other issue is if your eyes are better able to deal with the LCD screen then the peep hole.

Geoff,

>>So, how would a homeowner benefit from such a device?<<

I'll quote Russell on that:

"Since it records video and is motion activated, you can check and see who's been at the door in your absence."

Not a bad thing. It's also simple to use (or appears to be).

I'd add that, if one has children, mounting the device at a lower level, with good instructions to the kids, they'd know when it was OK to open the door. And, if one has a an alarm system in place, some sort of tie in to that (panic button) that goes there.

My other add-ons would be some sort of Bluetooth/wireless interface to a local box to upload motion detection to a secure server, as commercial surveillance packages do. Also, some sort of way to physically secure the SD card via password etc. to remove it.

It just looks like a step in the right direction for simplified monitoring in an increasingly dangerous world :-(

Bottom line: My iPod comment directly relates to Joe B.'s comment that it's a lifestyle product. Myself, good doors and locks, situational awareness, ADT and Ruger are *my* way of dealing with things. I still think it's a good start towards simplified security.

Ray,

>>Dunno. I think if I were a burglar and had come through that door, I'd tear the thing off the door and take it with me.<<

Sounds sensible ;-) My thought was that in addition to door mounting, one could use this device in other areas, more concealed. I just like the idea that's it *seems* to be an easier solution to security monitoring, and less $, than has been available.

Russell,

>>If they do, then by reviewing the video, you'd be on alert.<<

I forgot to make that point...if you know who should be around, those who don't might draw your attention.

So, It's an expensive substitute for a cheap peephole. Except that it's less
reliable, because a peephole doesn't have any batteries to run down. You
could, very cheaply, mount a lower peephole for the kids, of course.

The benefit of the device is that you can see who came to your door when you
weren't home.

That's not worth much to me. In fact, it's not worth anything to me.

Geoff
