Well, Let's see.... Bill Bridges is a rotorhead. Ray Tackett has his rating and was a Dustoff fellow. There are others. Even Deakin............

Me,too! (well, if your standard for "flew" is low enough<g>)
Helicopter is on my list, but no way to learn close by. Super busy now so that's probably just as well.

Me too, a few hours instruction in a Bell 47 with stick time in a Huey, Jet Ranger and something else that right now escapes me <sigh>, getting older and losing ones mind.

Well, I've had one takeoff in a helicopter, but no landings. They lowered meby a horsecollar to my ship. That'c the closest I ever want to come to to being hung.

I can't wait to provide my knowledge and experience to this section. Yes, with all my 8 hours logged in the R-22 and a couple of hours stick time in the Jet Ranger, 412 and BoKow, I am a wealth of information and just a little dangerous. So, bring on your questions!

Anne,
I was in "the back of the bus" in those days. Took me nearly 40 years to put my carcass back into a helicopter after that (you were there!), and a while longer to start private and commercial.
Except for an hour in an R-44, all my helo stick time is in a 22, all but 1/2 hour in the same machine.

Ray,
And all of those folks you came across were very glad to have you in "the back of the bus".

Stephanie,
>>...lowered meby a horsecollar...<<
Was that a usual practice, or was it something unusual ?
A long time ago several of us were mixed up in a situation in the English Channel where they were winching people up out of the water into a Sycamore. As cold as the Channel was I was becoming increasingly apprehensive as my turn came closer, but fortunately Walrus arrived just in time.
Something else I hadn't thought about before. The American services use alphanumeric codes for their aeroplanes and deliberately eschew using names except in rare cases, while everybody else uses names. Of course, if you asked a Frenchman what he was flying and he told you, "A Bregeut Deux Pont 761 Sahara Series" you probably wouldn't be any the wiser unless your last name was Graff or Van Haste.
A Sycamore was a Westland Helicopter, and a Supermarine Walrus was a pusher biplane amphibian built, to everybody's slack jawed astonishment by the same people who built the Spitfire.
If I could figure out Overly's system some people might be interested in pictures of some of these things.
Just a thought.

Usual practice if the ship either didn't have a proper helo deck or if the helo deck was too small. IIRC, the helo I had a short ride in (maybe five minutes) was a "Sh*thook".
In "The Hunt For Red October", there's a scene where the Jack Ryan character gets lowered from a H-3 to a sub.

Jeremy,
>>Walrus was a pusher biplane amphibian built, to everybody's slack jawed astonishment by the same people who built the Spitfire.<<
Ah, but wasn't it Supermarine who built a number of flying boats well before it undertook the S series racers and then what became the Spitfire (after being bought by Vickers)?
Despite its appearance, I've heard rumors the Walrus was extraordinarily seaworthy and pleasant to fly. Any comments?
Oops, and I'm in a helo section asking a question regarding a fixed-wing aircraft, and one that not only faces the danger of crashing but of sinking. I'll probably be hung, drawn and quartered.
Cheers, Rick

Overly's System For Posting Photos:
Assuming that the photos reside on your computer and that you're doing this in Web view:
Step 1:
Write the text of the post. Leave the ckeckbox at the bottom checked that says "I want to preview my post and/or attach a file". Follow the steps and upload the photo and post your post.
Step 2:
Open your new post. Click on the attachment and open it. Click on the URL for the attachment and copy it to the clipboard. Close the attachment.
Step 3:
Go to your post and click "edit". Below the editing box, click the link that says "Image". When the URL box opens for that, paste the URL of your attachment. Add any other text you may wish and then post the edited post.
If your picture is already residing in one of the tubes on the Internets <g>, all you have to do is copy the URL and proceed directly to Step 3.
Your picture will not be in the post. Good form says that you should make sure that the picture is no more than 700 pixels wide so that it fits on everyone's screen. But if that doesn't work for you, well, if they can't take a joke, then frak them.
Stephanie

Steph: Have to raise my hand, too. Winched on to and off of MacDonough off the Azores coming off Kennedy. Checked the block, don't need to do that again. We used to hop the helo's when we could when we were in port at places like Naples to get to the airport to hitch a ASCOMED flight back to Rota.
Hours dipping sonars or in starboard delta? I dunno about that.
Best, Andy

Steph: The DDG. 5'/54 x 2, fore and aft, single Standard aft, pad plus hangar, but IIRC not even big enough for RON LAMPS. She had some very early OTH targeting systems onboard that I was involved with a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away.

Well, getting back to AVSIG after the Christmas - New Year vacation in Oz, look what I find!
All the best for the new year, Anne - I flew an R-44 while in Oz - it was fairly new - the second iteration - I like it!
