diagnosis...please
      #134265 - 11/19/06 05:04 PM

I had shut off my computer accidentally with a house hold circuit breaker. When I turned it back on, it gave me about nothing.

I have a power supply, 12V and 5V are OK...no boot-up, no beeps or hard drive sounds. My DVD drive has its light on, and I can't open the drive...as in, when I push the button it won't open. Cooling fan operates and about nothing else.

Did my motherboard go TU...or is there another hidden fuse that I can't find?

Sounds to me like it's stuck in reset. Either the Power up reset controlled by the power supply, or the reset switch. Possibly something else.

Now you say that 5 and 12V is ok, what about the other lesser used voltages like -12? It may only take one bad voltage to prevent "power good" signal from the power supply.

Thanks Russell,

As a matter of fact, when I try to shut it off with the reset button...it doesn't do any thing...I have to use the power switch on the power supply.

I'll check the other leads..-12 3.3...

Too late to edit..

to avoid confusion, the reset button will turn on the power, then it hangs, and to turn it off I have to use the power switch on the power supply.

You have power so the power supply is probably okay. The DVD eject button is software controlled and will not work until the OS boots.

Sounds like your hard drive is not spinning, I would check the HD and see if it has power. If you have another PC install the HD in it and see if it is alive.

I've had HD's fail to power up after being shutdown.

I hope you have a backup.

Thanks Allen,

When I get back home tonight I'll swap hard drives, I have 2 identical units...

>>> The DVD eject button is software controlled and will not work until the OS boots. <<<

There's probably a software command to block the button, but normally the button doesn't require the system to be running to work. Not on units I've seen.

>>> Sounds like your hard drive is not spinning,<<<

I've seen some HD models that won't spin up if reset is continuously being asserted.

HD works, power supply works, sort of points to the MB.

If you have two identical units then maybe you go through the hassle of trying the dead PC MB with it's CPU and memory in the other PC.

You have a strange problem.
