Cooling decisions need to be made in light of the room temperature, in my experience: you can get away with much less cooling in an air-conditioned room. My machines are in the family room, non-A/C and south-exposed, and I've been using water cooling on the prime machine for about five years now.

West facing, AC when it gets to 71F, no problems with a D 955EE/7900GTX <G>. Starting to cool down here in Jersey, leaves are even starting to show hints of color.

Building another Compute [Re: Nigel Thompson(1D2)]

Nigel,

The RAID drive failure is noted in the RAID utility. But I did not receive
any notification. The controller is in the MB (Intel) so I'll look at the
manual and maybe give them a call.

The drive I have (Caviar xx) supposedly has a three year warranty. But to
get a quick replacement, I've ordered an overnight shipment from NewEgg.
When it gets here, I'll swap out the defective drive and ship it back to
them. Then I'll have a spare. Of course, doing the swap will also ensure
that the problem is the drive and not the controller.

Building another Compute [Re: Jerry Kurata [KLVK]]

Jerry,

Surprisingly, I don't think the switch to LCD will save that much. Of the
4.6kWh/day drawn by my unit, only about 0.6kWh is from the monitor. I'm
hoping to save about 0.3kWh by switching to LCD's, and another 2kWh by
switching to the Core2 and 7600 video card. And getting a smaller psu. I
don't really need a 1kW psu <g>.

I'll take a look at the Seasonic power supplies. I seem to recall someone
(Tom's Hardware perhaps?) recently did a study on power supply efficiency.
Thanks for the tip.

I looked briefly at the passively cooled video cards, but the one's I saw did
not have the performance of the 7600GT.

I recommend against Raid 0, I would run non-Riad before that. Either way a single drive failure and you are SOL BTDT.

The downside of the Raptors is higher cost per GB. I run a Raptor 74GB as my C and G drives (OS and games :)). I run Hitachi 7200 RPM drives for data. And the Hitachi 500GB is under $200 at NewEgg these days. But the Raptor is SWEET. I know from the days of the first 7200 RPM drives that drive speed is a bigger player in perceived computer performance than CPU speed.

Terry,

After I wrote about RAID 0, I had a drive die! The computer was functioning
OK, but making a funny noise. I finally realized the noise was the drive in
its death throes.

SO -- I have changed my mind and my next machine will again have a RAID10
configuration!

Best,

The passive Gigabyte cards have a 7600 GT processor.

When I first checked them out, the 256MB model had a fan. Now they have one
that does not, so I'll look at it again.

Thanks

Yeap, nasty. I just picked up an external drive to back up my wife's system to install a second drive in RAID 1. Then to keep my system backed up. :)

CompUSA has a LaCie 250GB external drive for $99.99. And the case is even a Porsche FA design. :)

<< Yeap, nasty. >>

Not sure which message you're responding to. I'm guessing it's the one about
the drive dying. The good news is that I got the replacement yesterday;
plugged it in. The system detected it; I told the RAID controller to use it
in the RAID array; and it automagically formatted it and rebuilt it with no
further intervention from me. Neat.
