Wanted Collins TDR-950 trtansponder
      #394366 - 07/27/14 08:13 PM

One of my high altitude balloon cabins is going in a museum. It needs a Collins TDR-950 transponder to fill an empty space in the dashboard.

Would like a low price so hoping for a non-functioning unit about to go in the trash!

Any help much appreciated...

Thanks

If you don't have any luck here, you might try the various repair places. They might have a "parts" unit they can sell you.

Or Beechtalk.com, since many Bonanzas were fitted with Collins equipment and you never know what's sitting on someone's hangar shelf. Hi Julian!

Julian,

I posted your request (not your name) on Beechtalk this afternoon. Got one hit so far.

Give Jim at Bay Avionics a call, I traded my TDR950 early this year, he might still have it.

SPECIAL THANKS TO JEFF HARTMAN. A TDR-950 is now in the balloon cabin in the Smithsonian Udvar-Hazy Center. Picture attached in the receiving area and it will be on permanent public display in a few weeks.

Seems like a modest panel? But how many of you actually need a 60,000 foot servo altimeter :-) [This cabin reached a world record 55,138 feet].

Nice. When was that record flight?

(Did they tell you anything about that ratty S-43 in the background?)

The ratty S-43 was at Pearl Harbor and survived. They are wondering what to do with it because restoration would be a major effort.

At least indoors, it's not going to deteriorate any further. But it does appear that a restoration would be almost a "dataplate" endeavor.

I'd think the Pacific Aviation Museum would be interested in it.

If they are serious, get someone to give me a call and I'll pass it on. Someone commented that it is such a big restoration job they don't know what they are going to do with it. But understand that comment was very much in passing.

I'll give it a shot. Can't be any worse off than Swamp Ghost.

They have tackled worse projects. Somewhere around Houston is a S-43 that once belong to Howard Hughes. It is the one he used to learn how to fly a flying boat, and he also crashed it into Lake Mead on a test flight that killed a CAA man. I think it was parked at JK West's place for a while.

Response:

I visited 1-J-1 at Udvar-Hazy this spring. It’s actually a JRS, not an S-43, but the two designs are about 95 percent identical.

It is in pretty rocky shape, but largely complete. Most of the work will be fabric and skin. They’re taking her back to Dec. 7 in grey and chrome yellow.

Smithsonian has no intention whatsoever of allowing the bird to leave Washington, alas.

Thanks for thinking of us!
