Interesting.

But that is not the signal the AF uses for come ahead. I think that motion is hard to see the motion.

Also, the slow down is not that different than come ahead.

I was marshalled out of TEB this week, with a guy guiding me (sorta jogging backwards) between a couple of parked jets with not a whole 'lotta room. He kept urging me to speed up, and all I could think of (beside wingtip clearance) was him tripping while jogging backwards. Not wanting PeopleBurger, I kept a slow pace. ;-)

I usually get some variation of some of those :).
I usually flash my taxi light when I see the line person so they know I have them in site.

Was being ground guided in one cold night in the rain in Destin. There were planes on each side of the taxiway and as we approached one, it was clearly forward of the line (turbine single with nose forward). Stopped even though the ground guy animatedly signaled me forward. My right seat passenger got out to look at clearance; we would have collided with the other plane. Ground folks pulled the other plane back; I restarted and taxied in.
When I left, all parking and ground fees were waived and I got a big fuel discount. My right seat passenger was cold at wet that night, but it worked out well.

Terry, when I was in the Fire Police, I learned first hand how hand signals
must be clear and unambiguous to the person you are signalling.

I was directing traffic at an accident scene when a state trooper walked up
to me and said, "I've got it," and began directing the traffic. So I stepped
aside.

Soon he thrust out his clenched fist at a stream of oncoming motorists. Then
he became very agitated and started waving his arms. I finally figured out
his clenched fist meant, "Hold it." Never saw that before. When I want
someone to stop, I put out my hand, fingers up and palm toward the person.
Depending on the conditions, I might face the person, feet apart and both
arms up in the air, palms toward the person. That never failed to stop them.

Never saw the clenched fist used again, except when a motorist waved it at
me, showing his displeasure at being delayed. <g>

Dave -- I do the light flash, too. (And at night I make sure it's off before I turn into the marshaller.....)

I had a case that tangentially involved an incident of a G-V being marshalled (without wing walkers) in a relatively tight area at Bangor. Crunch. Them be looooong wings.

I'm glad they did not go through the powerback signals -don't know if aircraft even power back from the gates anymore -certinly not with wing engines.

Regards,

Dux -and also not sure if the USAF still has "Follow Me" melp trucks for taxi in.

Clenched fist is used in some industries. Hand starts open, with fingers splayed, then made into a fist to bring to a smooth stop.

I seem to remember it as a signal to a squad to stop, or hold position. Not so much on "the TARMAC". :-)

Jeff, according to the current infantry manual of hand signals, the clenched
fist means FREEZE. Presenting the palm, with fingers up, means STOP.

Still don't know if airlines use a powerback from the gate anymore.

I never liked it and the hand signals were different and hard to follow if you were going backwards with your feet on the floor and hand on the nose wheel steering and the other on the reverse throttles-and turning backwards. For me, only in the B-727.

Regards,

Dux

Nor do I, have no idea. OTOH, must say tho that I liked it very well, was able to do it with only two running on the 72s. But powerbacks sure required a lot of trust in the wingwalkers!

Try backing tail-over-water on an aircraft carrier at night!

Saw something similar on my visit to the TR back in '94. Not at night, but they were taxiing landed f-14's to the edge of the deck and turning them around. The nose gear is about under the pilot's butt, so he had nothing in front of him but water, and was looking back at a 19-yo kid waving flags...trust.
