Well, I saw what he said was a Cub. The (detached) wings looked like Cub wings.

Spare time? What's THAT???

Aside from finally having TIME to work on the aforementioned Cub, I'm scheduled to go in for kidney surgery next Tuesday to remove a large stone. I'm told I'll be in the hospital through the end of the week and then will be home, but out of commission, for the rest of the month, and maybe into August a bit.

No Oshkosh for THIS boy <sniff!>

As for the Cub, I've managed to almost finish a complete rebuild of the right wing with many new ribs and new leading edge skins. I started on the right wing because I knew it was going to require the most work as it had the (unauthorized) PA-18 wing tank installed in it and I needed to replace all the cut ribs with new ones. In addition to that, I needed to replace a number of broken aluminum braces, drag wires and other miscellaneous hardware while I was in there. By comparison, I'm hoping the left wing will be a little less eventful.

All the tail feathers are ready to cover, but the fuselage is still a mess and I haven't even looked at the engine.

NC98790 worked as a duster for years and the fuselage shows it. Aside from the modifications to remove the rear seat and install a hopper, all the controls had been reworked and have needed to be put back as new. Most of the parts for the control system have been acquired, inspected, documented and await an airworthy fuselage structure.

And there is my quandary - to complete the repairs I've started to the existing fuselage or purchase a new one. At some point in it's history (NOT documented in the logs) it appears to have been in a MAJOR ground loop and the fuselage was "repaired" with about a 5 degree twist and a 3 degree bend. I should have caught that before I bought it, but it was about to rain, I had a 1000 mile drive in front of me, I was rushing ... these are opportunities to learn, and I have.

The long and short of that chapter is that I purchased a new rear fuselage splice from Univair, but the more I look at it I wonder if I should simply trade the splice in for a complete new PMA'd fuselage (a $9000 delta).

As I said, "Spare time? What's that??? "

Oh, and I'm looking for either a MX job or else a hangar where I can hang out my A&P shingle.

To all, Thank You for the good words. It's been a fun, challenging experience and I feel like I've tied together a lot of seemingly unrelated pieces of information into a basis from which to hang new experiences on. Like a pilot's license, the A&P is just a learner's permit, and I hope I continue to learn for the remainder of my flying career.

I think we're going to have to reconvene the "Tar Hellions" this fall after I'm back on my feet (Y'All Come Now, HEAH?) for some serious smoked pig and celebrations. Maybe around Equinox time.

Well, depending on when you have your pig roast, if it coincides with a trip to Atlanta maybe I can come to it. Oh right, your home is a bit far from Atlanta and I'll not have an aircraft.

Oh well.

Best of luck with your kidney surgery. I trust everything will come out okay <G> and that your recovery will be swift and complete.

Congratulations Tom,

As to Tarhelions getting together, I keep thinking about wanting to get the tour of your school, but those calendar pages have been a blurr.

After your recovery, we'll certainly put a TARhellion event together in celebration of both your recovery and your certificate. Maybe you still have influence at the school to arrange a tour.

Best of luck to you, we'll look forward to hearing the results.

John and Pam
