Angel Flight Mid Atlantic sent out the same criteria via e-mail on Tuesday.

Scott,

Looks like rules made by a committee - as Heinlein said, "a life form with six or more legs and no brain".

Institutionalized foolishness. I'm going to check with the Air Care Alliance to see whether this nonsense is spreading.

Warmest regards,
Rick

Scott,

Just did some checking - this pronouncement is by one of Ed Boyer's organizations. It is not a member of the Air Care Alliance which is the umbrella organization for the vast majority of volunteer pilot organizations. The part about extensive research and communication with volunteer pilot organizations in reaching the rules is simply untrue. The majority of VPOs were not contacted. From what I can tell from some initial research is that this is just another of Ed Boyer's unilateral pronouncements set forth as if he has talked with the dozens of VPOs of various kinds.

My opinion is to get out of any VPO that has a TBO requirement and fly for one that understands that TBO is a meaningless number when it comes to engine health.

This kind of moronic statement only serves to perpetuate aviation myths.

We should send the organization some chicken bones and voodoo masks as they're just as reliable as predicting engine health as TBO.

Warmest regards,
Rick

Rick,

<<Institutionalized foolishness>>

Besides the TBO requirement, which I think most of us see the foolishness in, was there anything else there you took exception to?

Rick -- There is some indication that the TBO issue is being substantially
rethought at this time. I'm heartened by that.

I've never been able to figure out all the competing charitable flying
organizations. All I know is that there seems to be some competition between
some of them, and that isn't terribly seemly.

BTW, happy Fathers' Day!

That escalated to the extreme between AFSE and AF Ga, to the point of lawsuits.

Bob,

I'm not crazy about the age 75 rule; however, what really is upsetting is for that small group of VPOs to claim it contacted a large group of VPOs to discuss such rules when it does not appear any such contact was made.

Warmest regards,
Rick

I must have missed that one. None of requirements concern me, although the O-320 in my Skyhawk has about 1600 smoh in 1999. Don't know if Lycoming has a calendar limit on my engine. But it should be several years before I'll be concerned hitting the recommended TBO.
Best,
John
