Nice flight simulator flight today
      #215445 - 10/02/08 10:34 PM

I'm in Orlando, for semi-annual recurrent training. Had a few minutes to kill at the end, after doing a single-engine circle-to-land at JFK.

This is one of FlightSafety's latest simulators, full-motion, day-time visual, all electic motion (someone said 600 amp motor that is reversed to change direction??). Very smooth, worked great.

The instructor wanted to show off the 'Google images digitized' for use as 'scenery' in the simulator. My co-pilot for the day had lived in Astoria, so he recognized all the sites in the area. I was most taken by flying by the Statue of Liberty, at about 50', and looking out (he paused the sim) and the Lady and her torch. We then did a turn about the Lady, then headed north up the Hudson. I went up the Hudson at 250 knots, about 30', then went under the GW bridge. I was cleared to land 'wherever I wanted', so I landed back at JFK. Taxied into the terminal and parked UNDER an Airbus 340.

Bad day to have a Blackberry with a camera...arrgghh.

What model do you fly?

One of my former primary students is in MCO right now doing recurrent on the Sovereign.

XL, typically. XLS this time through.

I saw some Sovereign guys in passing.

He wears a gold tie. Late sim period.

I looked in a QS XL/XLS (don't know which) in BFI some months ago. Really nice looking airplane. I was reading about the various models on wiki the other day but I'm not clear as to the difference between the XL and XLS.

XLS has updated (somewhat) avionics and slightly more power. MTOW increased to 20,200 lbs. It will go straight to 450 at MTOW. Still a .74 airplane, though.

Is the XL/XLS considered a single type at NJA?

The one I saw at BFI looked very new. Are the XLS aircraft all newer than the XL?

Looking at pics on airliners.net, the Sovereign cockpit was cleaned up quite a bit over the XL/XLS. I guess all those annunciator lights moved to the EFIS?

We fly both the XL and the XLS. The XLS is the follow-on to the XL. The newest iteration is the XLS+. Sharper nose, ProLine 21 avionics. STILL a .74 airplane.

The Sovereign is kind of compromise airplane. It's essentially a X without the big motors (or the .92 cruise). It has the Honeywell Epic avionics, which is a large improvement over the X's Primus, but the Epic was pretty much out-of-date when the Sovereign came out.

The Sovereign has great range and great short field performance. It can go Hilton Head (4300 foot runway) to LAX non-stop at .72 cruise. Also has a HUGE baggage compartment.

It seems strange to me that the Sovereign's avionics would be considered "out-of-date" after spending 11+ years in the DC9! :)

Thanks for the info. Lots to learn...

Yeah, interestingly the guy who was my co-pilot had come from flying C172's for the FlightSafety Academy at Vero Beach...with G1000 panels. More advanced stuff than the XLS cockpit.

I've used the 430 a little bit but only looked at pictures of the G1000. I've wondered how frequently a guy would have to fly the G1000 to remain proficient.

So, why don't you tell your boss that he needs to schedule a trip to BNA so that I can come out and take a look at your XLS? :)

Hey Larry, happy birthday.

We actually have an XL, but it is for sale. We have not been flying, but if we get to BNA, I'll be sure to let you know.

Steve

Sometime back, while in recurrent sim, the instructor expressed some indifference ahead of time to our performance on the circle-to-land maneuver. "When's the last time you did a circle to land?!" I informed the DFW-based instructor about the fun we routinely have in the Northeast with the JFK VOR 13L, the LGA Expressway visual, and the River Visual to DCA, and the ILS-1 DCA circle to 33. He changed his tune.
