Piper Announces LSA
      #278828 - 01/21/10 05:28 PM Attachment (355 downloads)

"Piper Aircraft says it's going back to its roots with a Czech-built light sport aircraft it's calling the PiperSport. In its first appearance at the U.S. Sport Aviation Expo in Sebring, Fla. today, the company unveiled the aircraft, which was previously sold as a SportCruiser by Czech Sport Aircraft."

Low wing, Rotax autogas burner.

Not cheap. Cub as an LSA much more within the budget.....

I thought that Piper already had a Light Sport Aircraft. Something they came out with 70 years ago, or so?

Yeah, wish they were still building it now.

They did, but the new one should cruise almost twice as fast on about the same fuel burn as the first one.

I saw one of these at a small exhibition at my local field, FCM. I was impressed. It was very attractive (unlike -many- LSAs) and the performance numbers looked respectable.

Congratulations!

Have not taken delivery yet. It is owned by a local Doctor, who wanted a blue and white one, but took the first one available, which was red and white. He is waiting on his blue and white one to be assembled in Florida.

Our buying it saved him a delivery trip back to FL.

...a year later and Piper announced they are ending the marketing relationship with Czech Sport Aircraft.

They go on to say the separation is nothing to do with the aircraft, but a difference at the corporate level.

Maybe putting their name on an airplane that has all the flight, engine and airframe instruments replaced by a non-TSO'd piece of junk called Dynon is a bad idea.

?

As someone whose future is "married" to airplanes equipped with a Dynon EFIS, I have to ask:
1. Which model EFIS?
2. Which options does it (they) include?
3. What features don't work as you'd like?

These are serious questions and I'm not just trying to defend Dynon. While I don't have any operational experience with them yet, I'm in the middle of installing a dual Model 180 EFIS system with the autopilot option in an RV-12 and the hardware appears to be well made mechanically.

I'd also be interested in knowing if it's a complete Dynon system, or if the Czechs engineered a system with multiple vendors equipment in play. Everything I've heard from the RV-12 community concerning Dynon is good, but it's an end-to-end Dynon system (including all the sensors) with Garmin radios providing the NAV information.

Good luck sorting things out and let me know if I can be any help. Drop by sometime, the coffee pot's on.

Tom,

You may recall I installed a Dynon D-60 in my Chief (supplemental, VFR, situational awareness only <G>). In 50 or so hours before I sold it last April, I found the Dynon to be accurate, very readable and generally satisfactory. with one exception:

The heading reference was very goosy, difficult to "slave" and not usable in any mode other than level flight. Unfortunately, that was the functionality I wanted most from the device. If I were to have another, I would want a separate heading indicator

Hi Bob,

Was the Dynon in your Champ installed on a 337, or logbook entry, or?

It was done with just a logbook entry. If you look closely, you'll see that I retained all the required instruments, the rationale (agreed to by two of my colleagues-who are I.A.s)being that it was "supplemental" really no different than the common "paneldock" installations.

Looking back (I sold the Chief in June when I left Alaska), I probably wouldn't do it again, as there are a number of cheaper alternatives which hew closer to the regs, but the point under discussion was the quality of the device, and I found it to be highly suitable.

Bill (not Bob and it was a Chief, not Champ <G>)

Am I remembering wright or wrong, the Chief was shorter coupled and could swap ends easier than a Champ?
Wow, an 0-235, that must have climbed well!

Never having swapped ends in a Champ, but coming close a couple times in a Chief, I'm inclined to agree.

re: climb: The mains were usually off before I could get full power. I bought it after the conversion; all the important decisions had been made, but the same STC authorizes an O-200 and that would be a better airplane. 100 pounds lighter, same performance.

Squirley, eh ?

A friend in high school (Titusville, Fl) had a Chief that we took down to Patrick AFB and flew some real slow GCAs on quiet nights..... and back to Arthur Dunn for exciting landings...
