Tom,

You may recall I installed a Dynon D-60 in my Chief (supplemental, VFR, situational awareness only <G>). In 50 or so hours before I sold it last April, I found the Dynon to be accurate, very readable and generally satisfactory. with one exception:

The heading reference was very goosy, difficult to "slave" and not usable in any mode other than level flight. Unfortunately, that was the functionality I wanted most from the device. If I were to have another, I would want a separate heading indicator

Was the Dynon in your Champ installed on a 337, or logbook entry, or?

It was done with just a logbook entry. If you look closely, you'll see that I retained all the required instruments, the rationale (agreed to by two of my colleagues-who are I.A.s)being that it was "supplemental" really no different than the common "paneldock" installations.

Looking back (I sold the Chief in June when I left Alaska), I probably wouldn't do it again, as there are a number of cheaper alternatives which hew closer to the regs, but the point under discussion was the quality of the device, and I found it to be highly suitable.

Am I remembering wright or wrong, the Chief was shorter coupled and could swap ends easier than a Champ?
Wow, an 0-235, that must have climbed well!

Never having swapped ends in a Champ, but coming close a couple times in a Chief, I'm inclined to agree.

re: climb: The mains were usually off before I could get full power. I bought it after the conversion; all the important decisions had been made, but the same STC authorizes an O-200 and that would be a better airplane. 100 pounds lighter, same performance.

Squirley, eh ?

A friend in high school (Titusville, Fl) had a Chief that we took down to Patrick AFB and flew some real slow GCAs on quiet nights..... and back to Arthur Dunn for exciting landings...
