Dang. You beat me to it. I was just about to post the exact same article.

As usual, I see pros and cons.

I'm wondering if PATCO will be able to organize the robots running the unmanned towers? :-)))

No robots - yet. This is remote towering, not automated towering.

I think the big thing for me is redundancy and disaster preparedness. A cat 5 storm might blow out all the windows, but there's still a tower to climb and work from. If the pole blows down, then what?

So the big question - does it have a remote light gun for NORDO situations?

Hi Russell,
Easy . . . just carry the remote cameras and light gun aloft with a drone<gd&r>.

When I take my students tor a tower visit, we often ask for a light gun demonstration. They have to brush the cobwebs off the light gun to do it.

No doubt. But it's a backup safety device. So what's the plan for NORDO? Or is it all "we never use it so we don't need it"?

Well, most airplanes have life rafts that have never been used either.

Gil -- A month ago I was switched to Approach at ILM by Seymour Johnson approach around 9PM. Couldn't get 'em, went back to Seymour. Apparently it was a complete transmit failure at the TraCab at ILM, approach and tower transmitters were out (I assume Ground, too). Seymour told me to stay with him, he'd see me most of the way, and then enter the pattern for a visual and look for light gun signals.

LIGHT GUN SIGNALS!?!?!?!

Thankfully the clipboard that I use on flights is one my wife gave me, and it has the light gun signals on it. Got that in hand quickly, ready to go, heart-rate returning to normal. <G>

As it happened, they got the transmitter working again (another Quarter in the box?) before I got to see any lights.

Taxiing in, I told the local controller that I'd had a moment of panic before I got my cheat sheet in hand. She told me that she got pulled out of the break room because they wanted someone who (supposedly) knew how to work the gun. Who knows?

I visited the Queen Mary long ago in Long Beach, and one of the lifeboats had been set up as a display, tilted inboard with a plexiglass cover revealing the survival equipment inside. A tourist couple were looking it over, and the husband, reading a placard, said "It says here they never used these."
